Potential Risks and Complications of Genesis Skin Rejuvenation

Genesis Skin Rejuvenation is a laser, non surgical skin rejuvenation procedure that can reduce wrinkles, age spots, scars and other skin imperfections. Even if Genesis Skin Rejuvenation is safer than other ablative and more aggressive skin treatments, there are a few potential risks and complications that are associated with this treatment.

Skin Infections

After the Genesis Skin Rejuvenation treatment, the patient may develop skin infections. This is due to the fact that the skin is more sensitive after the treatment and there may be viruses, bacteria or fungi in the environment.

Patients should get an oral antibiotic treatment for 7 to 14 days after the Genesis Skin Rejuvenation treatment. The products used during the time the skin is more sensitive should be carefully chosen. Hypoallergenic makeup and face creams should be used. There may also be special ointments recommended after the Genesis Skin Rejuvenation treatment. If an infection occurs, this will manifest through fever, oozing of the face (for more than 24 hours, which is considered normal) or pus.

Delayed Healing

The average healing time needed after a Genesis Skin Rejuvenation treatment is between 5 to 7 days. Some patients may experience delayed healing, which may be due to:

  • Smoking before and after the surgery
  • Diabetes

The healing process after Genesis Skin Rejuvenation can be sped up by using cold compresses after the treatment.

Scarring

Even if normally the Genesis Skin Rejuvenation treatment doesn’t cause scars, some patients may experience scarring, which is permanent. The scars can occur due to an inadequate use of the laser beams (which can be adapted to the skin of the patient and patients with more sensitive skin get a lower intensity laser treatment).

Irregular Pigmentation

The Genesis Skin Rejuvenation will resurface skin and will not typically leave areas that have irregular pigmentation. However, in rare cases, the treatment may cause an adverse reaction and excessive melanin production, so there may be hyperpigmeted areas. These hyperpigmented areas will be only temporary and should subside after a few months.

Acne Outbreaks

Even if Genesis Skin Rejuvenation may be used to treat acne and acne scars, it can cause acne outbreaks. This is a rare complication, but can be met. This is due to the fact that the treatment stimulates the formation of collagen and other essential skin oils or sebum, resulting in acne formation.

This complication may occur in patients that have a history of acne, but also in patients that haven’t had this problem before. There are numerous alternative treatments to reduce acne, but typically, the acne will only be present after the treatment.

Bleeding

Even if Genesis Skin Rejuvenation is not a surgical procedure, bleeding may be experienced during and after the treatment. This complication may occur in patients with more sensitive skin. Typically, the bleeding should stop within 1 hour after the surgery. If the bleeding persists, the plastic surgeon should be notified.
