What to Expect During Epidermal Leveling

Epidermal Leveling, also known as dermaplaning, is a non-invasive procedure that removes the top layer of the skin. This layer of skin is mostly made up of dead skin cells. The results are smoother skin, more even pigmentation, reduction of the appearance of acne scars and a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike some other similar procedures, epidermal leveling is appropriate for all skin types and hues. Epidermal leveling must be performed by a certified professional with experience in the procedure.

During the Procedure

Epidermal leveling must be performed in a doctor's office. Very little preparation is required for epidermal leveling. Before performing the procedure, your doctor or aesthetician will cleanse your face. The leveling itself is performed with a specially designed surgical scalpel, which is scraped over the surface of the skin while the doctor holds the skin taut. The doctor does not exert a great deal of pressure with the blade, and moves it over the skin in a sweeping motion. The entire procedure usually takes about 45 minutes.

After the Procedure

There is little to no down time after epidermal leveling. Some patients choose to have an additional procedure, such as a chemical peel, afterward, but many do not. Your doctor can help you decide if a combination of procedures is a good choice for you.

After epidermal leveling, your skin will look smoother, clearer and more uniform. The procedure also removes the fine hairs on the face along with the top layer of dead skin cells. To maintain the look and health of your skin, you should be sure to use appropriate facial moisturizers and other products, many of which might be recommended by your doctor.

Epidermal leveling should be performed once a month for best results.
