What to Expect during Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy, sometimes called “Surgical Medicine”, involves the injection of medication into the body to alleviate cellulite. With the introduction of certain homeopathic remedies, vitamins, minerals and other more traditional medicines, the injections, deposited directly into the fat, break the fat deposits down.

Preparing for the Procedure

Before the Mesotherapy begins, the doctor will perform an allergy test during the initial consultation. Two injections of the medication intended for use in the procedure is administered, and the patient will then report whether any negative reactions have occurred after a 24 hour period. If none have occurred, then the patient is ready for the actual procedure.

During the Procedure

The doctor starts the procedure by mapping the area that is to be treated. Mapping the area of treatment is vital, as some cellulite will not be readily identifiable when the patient is lying down. After the mapping is complete, the patient is laid on the table and the injections are then delivered. The size of the needles are determined by the patient’s skin color. White skin requires a smaller needle of 4mm and for black skin, a slightly larger needle of 6mm is used. After the injections are finished, the treated areas of the body are stimulated to encourage self-healing.

The procedure itself will take as little as 30 minutes up to an hour and is relatively pain-free. The needles themselves are quite small and cause only the slightest bit of discomfort when injected. Potential side effects are minor as well, consisting of temporary swelling, burning, soreness and skin discoloration--all of which, if experienced, will subside soon after treatment.
