History of VelaSmooth

Although the VelaSmooth product has not been long on the market, it does have a significant history and a timeline of how scientists and skilled dermatologists have been able to revolutionize the way they treat cellulite in patients.

What Is VelaSmooth?

VelaSmooth is a new product that uses “elos” technology, a blend of RF and infrared energies, to stimulate the skin and potentially diminish cellulite, or fat build up in various parts of the body. This treatment is non-invasive, has few side effects, and is generally seen as a safe way to deal with cellulite, although reported results have varied.

History of VelaSmooth

Working from the model of certain kinds of laser systems, Dr. Michael Kreindel spent years working on what eventually became known as "elos" or Electro-optical Synergy technology. He and Dr. Shimon Eckhouse, who held the patent for a system called Intense Pulse Light or IPL, founded Syneron in 2000 and started intensive testing for using elos to treat the conditions now treated by VelaSmooth.

VelaSmooth was approved by the FDA in 2005. After some initial concern about how the device would work on fat cells, the regulatory agency found no ongoing issues with the device. After VelaSmooth, the producer, Syneron, introduced another product using the same “elos” technology, and called it VelaShape. This product also got FDA approval.

VelaSmooth and VelaShape continue to be used to treat cellulite in many patients. Women who have gone through pregnancy are a popular client base for VelaSmooth procedures because of how the body prepares for childbirth. Some patients have reported great results with these cosmetic dermatology treatments, while others have been less successful in using these new technologies to smooth away fatty deposits and improve body contours.
