Potential Risks and Side Effects of Blue Peel

Blue peel is type of chemical facial peel, and with every chemical peel, the risk and severity of side effects depend on two things: the depth of the peel's penetration of the skin and the patient's skin type and complexion. The Blue Peel is a deeper peel than peels that can be obtained over the counter, and the there are some complications that can occur with deeper peels if they are not applied by an experienced professional.

As with any peel, some of the lesser side effects include pain, redness and swelling afterward, and these may range from mild to a more intense pain or sensation. During the procedure, the patient can expect a burning sensation, which should last for a couple of minutes per every layer applied.

Pigmentation Changes

While loss of pigmentation is in some cases expected and even desired, an unwanted loss of natural skin pigmentation may also occur. This is more common in patients with darker skin. The loss of pigment in the skin is a side effect that is likely permanent and not reversible.

Uneven Results

If the peel is not applied properly, there runs the risk of having uneven results. Uneven penetration of the chemical agent may result in uneven skin color, and if the procedure is not carried out correctly, the amount of time needed for adequate healing may be prolonged. Uneven peeling may also occur if the peel is not applied properly.

Herpes Simplex Virus

With the use of deep chemical peels comes the risk of flares of the herpes simplex virus. This is most commonly associated with cold sores on the mouth, fever sores, and occasionally ulcers on the lips, mouth and gums. The peeling and open sores that may occur during the healing process after the application of the chemical peel may increase the chances of herpes simplex outbreaks.

Common Side Effects

Most of the side effects listed above can be avoided by making sure that the peel is applied by someone who has been professionally trained to apply a deep peel (such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon). However, there are some side effects that a normal and that the patient should expect to experience. For instance, following the procedure the patient can expect some redness in the area treated and a tightening sensation in the skin. Immediately after the procedure, the skin will retain a blue tint, but that will wash off within 12 to 24 hours of the procedure taking place. As with any deep peel, peeling of the skin can be expected within two to three days after the procedure and a full recovery can be expected to take up to ten days.

There are some potentially serious side effects that can occur after a blue peel has been applied. However, if they are applied under strict protocol and in a professional environment, the risk of complications becomes low.
