Pregnancy and Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a surgical treatment that scrapes the rough and irregular patches of the skin. The procedure can give you younger and smoother looking skin and is often used to improve the appearance of scars after accidents. Possible complications prevent doctors from recommending this treatment to pregnant patients. Here are just some of the issues that associated with pregnancy and dermabrasion.

Skin Sensitivity

Many pregnant women develop a condition called melasma or "the mask of pregnancy." This results in dark patches and splotches appearing on the face. While micro dermabrasion is considered a good treatment for such a condition, it is not recommended until after the delivery. The hormonal changes a woman experiences during her pregnancy make her skin extremely sensitive. The supersensitivity can cause the skin to have negative reactions to the treatment resulting in breakouts, irritation and itchiness.

Slow Recovery

Another reason why doctors discourage pregnant women from receiving dermabrasion is the slow recovery process. The changing hormones make it difficult to form new skin cells after the treatment. As a result, a woman may experience scarring or hyperpigmentation.

Lack of Results

Dermabrasion can be very effective when performed on the ideal candidate. However, when the procedure is done on  apregnant patient, there is a greater chance that the treatment won't yield any results. During pregnancy, estrogen helps to breakdown the production of collagen in order to prepare the body for childbirth. Therefore, there is a chance that the dermabrasion process will not properly stimulate collagen production and skin renewal.
