Treatments that Can be Combined with Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is one of the most popular and proven ways to improve the condition of facial skin. It is an effective skin refinishing treatment done through controlled surgical scraping to soften surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance. Unlike chemical peels, dermabrasion is designed to treat deeper skin imperfections like wrinkles around the mouth, and improve the appearance of acne scars. It is also used to remove tattoos, keratoses and skin lesions.

Dermabrasion is done using a specialized instrument to sand the treated skin area. This method targets to improve your skin contour when a new layer of skin replaces the treated area. Dermabrasion is usually performed with an anesthetic or a sedative to relieve you of discomfort. The procedure involves freezing the skin on the treated area then scraping the skin with a high-speed rotary instrument (with a rough wire brush to scrape away skin surface irregularities). The skin is then treated after the scraping through ointments, wet or waxy dressing, or dry treatment.

After the procedure, your skin will feel like it has just been brush-burned, with the healing expected to occur within seven to ten days. Dermabrasion can be used alone, but some doctors use it in conjunction with other dermatological procedures like chemical peels, scar removal or a facelift.

Skin Rejuvenation

Dermabrasion is a skin refinishing procedure designed to give your skin an improved appearance by scraping away the outermost layer of skin and letting the new skin grow back. It is an invasive treatment option for skin rejuvenation with effective results. Alternative treatments that are less invasive are chemical peels or light energy treatments, like IPL and laser procedures. Chemical peels can revive the skin condition for a smoother appearance, and when done in conjunction with Dermabrasion, can give you maximum results for skin refinishing and rejuvenation treatments.

Scar Removal

Scar removal treatments can be done in different ways. The less invasive methods are Dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels or dermal filler injections. However, there is also a surgical procedure called Surgical Scar Removal that involves adjustment of the scar, placing it towards a natural line or wrinkle, or excising the scar so the healing will produce a less noticeable mark. Punch graft is also a scar removal procedure designed to minimize depressed acne scars by placing a circular tissue area where the scar is located and covering it up with skin removed from another part of the body. The scar from a punch graft is not as obvious as the scars it replaced. The results of more aggressive scar removal procedures can further be enhanced by camouflaging the less visible scars on the treated areas with Dermabrasion.

Facelift

Another common surgical procedure is a facelift, which is usually done for patients who need more than skin resurfacing and wrinkle correction procedures. An invasive surgical approach to reversing the obvious signs of aging like furrows and deep facial lines, facelift treatment can be further enhanced by Dermabrasion to refinish the skin and give it a smoother and younger look. Dermabrasion can also target skin problems like scars and skin lesions, which when done in conjunction with a facelift can produce a better overall facial appearance.
