Hylaform Myths and Facts

Cosmetic treatments and procedures have seen a tremendous increase in popularity over the last 10 years, in part because of the introduction of new technologies and techniques that allow them to be performed more easily and with less discomfort to patients. Some of the most common procedures are called skin or derma fillers. These are substances which are injected under the skin into affected areas to smooth out lines and wrinkles. One such treatment is known as Hylaform. It is a bio-synthetic and highly purified gel composed of a natural substance called hyaluronic acid, which is produced in the body to lubricate and maintain skin tissue. As the body ages, less of this material is produced, causing the skin to lose its suppleness and elasticity. Hylaform is designed to counter this process by replacing the lost hyaluronic acid, but because the treatment is relatively new, there are a number of misconceptions about it.

Myth: Hylaform Is Not Safe

Fact: The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of Hylaform for treating lines and wrinkles and for skin revitalization.  Hylaform is composed of the naturally occurring substance hyaluronic acid, and therefore does not require a pre-treatment allergy test, and can be used for all skin types. However, those patients with a history of severe allergic reactions are strongly advised to consult with their physician prior to undergoing any Hylaform procedure.

Myth: There Are Many Side Effects from Hylaform

Fact: Hylaform treatments are considered non-invasive, and require little preparation or recovery time. As with any injection, patients may suffer some discomfort from the needle, and may experience temporary soreness, bruising, discoloration or swelling. If these conditions persist, patients should contact their doctor.

Myth: Hylaform Treatments Are Permanent

Fact: The hyaluronic acid in Hylaform is a natural substance. It will be broken down over time and absorbed by the body. Although the effects of the procedure will be immediate, they will fade over time, and may require additional treatments to maintain the effects over a sustained period. The effects of a treatment may last approximately 6 to 9 months.

Myth: All Skin Issues Can Be Treated with Hylaform

Fact: The Hylaform procedure was developed to treat mild to moderate lines, wrinkles and folds, particularly in the facial area. It was not developed as a treatment for other skin conditions such as acne or scar tissue.

Myth: Hylaform Takes Time to Work

Fact: The effects of a Hylaform treatment are immediate. As the gel is injected under the skin, it begins to replace the lost hyaluronic acid, firming the skin's volume while lubricating surrounding tissue, which fills in lines and wrinkles, giving the skin a younger, toned appearance.

Myth: Hylaform Can Be Administered by Anyone

Fact: Despite being a non-invasive, low impact treatment, Hylaform is an injectible substance, and can therefore rightfully be called a medical procedure. Although some estheticians and cosmeticians may be able to perform a Hylaform treatment, that doesn't necessarily mean they are competent or capable. Patients are strongly recommended to consult with a physician about the potential risks of undergoing any medical procedure not administered by a licensed medical professional.
