Juvederm Myths and Facts

JUVEDERM ® is an example of a dermal or skin filler, which is a product that is injected under the skin, filling and adding volume to smooth lines and wrinkles caused by aging, hormonal changes or sun damage, by hydrating and firming the affected area. Although it is a common and popular form of non invasive cosmetic procedure, there are some common misconceptions about JUVEDERM ® .

Myth: JUVEDERM ® Is Not Safe

Fact: JUVEDERM ® is a gel made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance throughout all biological organisms, including human beings. Its role is to lubricate and protect tissue such as skin. JUVEDERM ® is biosynthetically produced without the use of animal substances, is FDA approved for people of all skin tones and types and does not require testing for allergic reaction prior to the procedure. However, JUVEDERM ® is not recommended for individuals with a history of multiple or anaphylactic allergic reactions or for pregnant or breastfeeding women and people under 18 years of age. Patients are strongly advised to discuss the potential risks with their physician before undergoing any medical procedure.

Myth: JUVEDERM ® Requires Multiple Treatments

Fact: Although noticeable results can be achieved after a single procedure, the hyaluronic acid in JUVEDERM ® will eventually be absorbed into the body, just as the naturally occurring substance will. This usually takes a period of up to 12 months. Depending upon the severity of the issue for individual patients, additional treatments may be required for optimum results over an extended period.

Myth: JUVEDERM ® Is Painful

Fact: JUVEDERM ® gel to is administered with a needle, and may also require the injection of a local anesthetic to numb the affected area first. Apart from the pricking sensation of the needle, patients should experience little or no discomfort from the procedure.

Myth: JUVEDERM ® Has Many Side Effects

Fact: The most common immediate after effects of a JUVEDERM ® treatment may include swelling or soreness of the affected area, redness or other mild discoloration, a slight stinging sensation or itching or light bruising, all of which should only last for 1 to 7 days. If any of these symptoms persist, patients are advised to contact their physician. After the procedure, patients should avoid exposing the treated area to extreme hot or cold temperatures.

Myth: Cosmeticians and Estheticians Can Administer JUVEDERM ®

Fact: Although JUVEDERM ® is a non-invasive treatment, it is still considered a medical procedure, and as such does carry some risks, however minimal, such as bacterial infection. Therefore it is strongly advised that patients only receive JUVEDERM ® treatment from licensed physicians or medical practitioners.

Myth: JUVEDERM ® Shouldn't Be Combined with Other Cosmetic Treatments

Fact: JUVEDERM ® injections can and are often combined with other cosmetic procedures, including surgery, but are done so on an individual case by case basis. Patients should always discuss with their physician in advance the benefits and risks of undergoing JUVEDERM ® treatments with any additional procedures, particularly surgery, and is another good reason why only licensed medical professionals should be entrusted to perform any kind of cosmetic treatment.
