Post-Dysport Lifestyle & Maintenance

Dysport is a relatively new injectable anti-wrinkle treatment (similar to the ever-popular Botox Cosmetic) that the FDA approved in April 2009. In October of that same year, the FDA approved Dysport use for those suffering from a movement disorder called cervical dystonia.

According to the FDA's Dysport Summary Review, research shows that other countries have been using Dysport for 20 years to treat conditions of muscular and neuromuscular origin. These conditions include, but are not limited to, nerve disorders, tick disorders, involuntary contractions of larger muscle groups, cerebral palsy and excessive sweating.

No matter your reasons for seeking Dysport treatment, certain factors of post-Dysport lifestyle and maintenance remain important considerations before, during and after making your final decision.

Post-Dysport Maintenance Treatments

After your initial Dysport injection session, you will possibly see results in as little as 4 hours to within 3 days. Ipsen claims that Dysport has the ability to plump up the complexion because it utilizes an agent called Bacterium Clostridium within the injection. This may account for the quick results enjoyed by many patients. The overall effects of Dysport have the potential to last anywhere from 3 1/2 to 6 months, according to the manufacturer. In some cases, Dysport has lasted up to 12 months.

You will not know how long the effects of Dysport will last until you receive your first dose. If your first dose lasts 6 months, then you may only have to return twice a year for continuing maintenance. If the results of your first session last for one whole year, then your maintenance schedule will involve seeking treatment only once a year.  According to the medication guide provided by Ipsen, a second treatment, if necessary, is not advised until at least 12 weeks, or 3 months, have passed.

Home Care

It is very important for you to live a healthy lifestyle that is conducive to taking care of yourself and your skin. Most doctors will tell patients that there isn't much aftercare involved post-Dysport. Most smart doctors will tell patients to either continue with their healthy lifestyle habits or urge them to begin a routine of healthy lifestyle habits.

For the skin on the face, this means a daily regimen of good skin care. The following are some good skin care tips:

  • Shun the Sun: Refrain from allowing the sun's powerful, harmful ultraviolet rays to permeate the skin on your face between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when the sun is the hottest. Abstaining from this activity will keep your skin from drying out. Dry skin is less pliable and less moist; therefore, dry skin provides an opportunity for wrinkles to spread on the face. If you must go out in the sun for extended periods, cover up with sunblock and/or hats, long-sleeve shirts and long pants.
  • No Smoking: Smoking accelerates  the aging of your skin, increasing wrinkles and depleting the oxygen in the body. Therefore, the necessary nutrients are not being circulated to nourish your outer perimeter ... your skin.
  • Clean and moisturize your face: Use warm, not hot, water to wash your face at least once a day. Use the proper gentle cleanser specifically made for your skintype. It is rather ironic but too much water, or spending time in a pool or bath for extended periods, will dry out your skin. This is due to the water depleting the natural oils in your skin. Always, always moisturize after your face is exposed to water.

For those who are living a post-Dysport lifestyle due to a neuromuscular disorder, (and this applies for the anti-wrinkle treatment, as well), preventing or learning how to manage stress is the most important consideration for making your Dysport results last a good, long time.
