Potential Side Effects of Purtox

Purtox is used to treat the deep furrows that occur between the eyebrows. There are potential side effects associated with using this product. Purtox contains botulinum toxin type A. This is the same active bacteria found in other dermal fillers. Purtox temporarily weakens or paralyzes the muscles by sending a signal that tells the nerve endings to block contractions. Smiling, frowning, squinting and scowling are examples of repetitive movements that cause contraction of the muscles over time.

Hypersensitivity

If you have experience hypersensitivity to the botulinum toxin in the past, you should not receive Purtox injections.

Infectious Disease

Any sign of infection or contagion at the treatment site must be resolved before you receive a Purtox injection.

Respiratory Disorders

You must inform your doctor if you have experienced any difficulty in breathing, such as bronchial or allergic asthma. Also tell your doctor if you suffer from lung disease or disorders. The doctor needs to also be aware of any allergic reactions you may have had in the past and if you have had previous botulinum injections.

Recent Surgical Procedures

Let you doctor know if you have had any recent facial reconstruction procedures, history of abnormal bleeding or any reactions to medications. Some prescription medications may interfere with Purtox. Additionally, the concurrent use of muscle relaxers with Purtox may cause a reaction.

Immediate Side Effects

Purtox is administered via injection in a doctor's office. You should be able to resume normal, daily activities shortly after treatment. You may experience some reddening, edema and contusions at the treatment site.

Virus Type Side Effects

You may also experience symptoms that mimic the manifestation of influenza. The irritation of the nasal and throat passages, along with general fatigue and weakness, are also common side effects. These symptoms should subside within a few weeks.

Less Common Side Effects

Less common side effects include headaches, swelling, weakness of muscles at treatment site, temporary vision impairment, dry eyes, numbness, itching, tingling and bruising.

Rare Side Effects

In some cases, rare and life-threatening side effects may occur. Call emergency services if you experience paralysis of facial muscles, dizziness, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing. These could indicate you are undergoing an allergic reaction and you must seek medical treatment immediately.

Purtox, although refined, is still a toxin. It is highly unlikely, but there is a slight risk that Purtox could enter into your bloodstream. If this happens, you could experience symptoms related to oral botulism poisoning. Complications of botulism poisoning include paralysis of the muscles of the body. This is very serious. Seek medical attention if you believe you are experiencing any of the above symptoms.

It is important that you obtain Purtox treatments from a doctor who has received specialized training in the administration of Purtox. An unskilled provider puts you at risk for serious complications.
