Medical Conditions and Fraxel

Fraxel is a non invasive laser procedure that is applied on the skin, especially in areas such as the face, hands or neck. The technology uses lasers that penetrate the deep layers on the skin and rejuvenate and repair the skin. Even if this treatment can be used in many patients with all skin tones and types, some people should avoid this type of treatment.

Autoimmune Skin Conditions

People with autoimmune skin conditions, such as psoriasis or lupus, should not get a Fraxel treatment. The laser beams can activate the immune system and can worsen the condition of a patient with an immune system disease.

Diabetes

Patients with diabetes may not benefit from a Fraxel treatment. The treatment hasn’t been tested on patients with diabetes, and the effects of such a treatment are not predictable. However, some plastic surgeons may perform the procedure in patients that have a stable condition and receive insulin. The specialist will pay special attention and will carefully monitor the patient’s condition after the treatment.

Hormonal Imbalances

Patients that have different hormonal problems, such as hyperthyroidism, should also avoid the Fraxel procedure. The excess of hormones can influence the outcome of the Fraxel treatment. For the same reason, women that are pregnant or are breastfeeding should also avoid Fraxel.

Acne Treatment

Patients that have acne and receive treatment with retinoids or roaccutane should not get a Fraxel treatment. The Fraxel procedure may only be recommended 6 months after the medications are discontinued.
