Say Yes to SPF! Surprising Ways to Protect Your Skin this Summer

As the weather begins to warm up, skin that's been hibernating all winter is especially susceptible to becoming sunburned. But greasing yourself up with slimy sunblock isn't the only option when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun's powerful rays. Here are a few surprising ways to get your SPF coverage: 1. Use cosmetics that contain an SPF. Many women already use foundation or powdered mineral products on a daily basis to even and enhance skin tone. There are plenty of formulas now available both in drugstores and department stores that contain an SPF--so your skin is beautified and protected in one easy step. 2. Look for clothing designed for sun protection. Most fabrics don't protect the skin from UV damage much at all, leaving the skin under regular clothing in need of almost as much protection as exposed skin. Fabric that does contain significant SPF is becoming more widely available--Nike?, Reebok?, Liz Claiborne? and Sportif? have used SPF fabrics for their apparel, headwear, swimwear, tents and umbrellas. 3. Use SPF-rich Body Lotions. Again, many companies are making versions of their products, or completely new products, that are designed with you protection in mind. Body lotions are often less greasy and may smell better than traditional sunblock, but be sure to check the level of SPF that the lotion contains--often lotions don't offer the protection a high-SPF sunblock can. You may even be able to find a sunless tanning product with an SPF; providing protection and a golden glow at the same time.
