Zeltiq's CoolSculpting Fat Removal System FDA Approved!

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the CoolSculpting device from Zeltiq for use in reducing fat on body areas like the abdomen, thighs, and waist. This completely non-invasive fat removal system eliminates fat cells by chilling them in a way that doesn't injure surrounding tissue. No anesthesia is required. The fat is permanently removed, but patients are cautioned that a healthy diet and exercise plan is required to maintain results. The initial research on the procedure, called cryolipolysis, was done at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Mass. General Hospital by Drs. Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson. The researchers discovered that fat cells are more susceptible to extreme cold, so the fat cells treated would die, while other, healthy tissue remains unaffected. Products from Zeltiq have been available for around a year, originally FDA approved to cool the skin around surgical sites. Specialists had begun using it in the off-label fat removal purpose, and now that the FDA has approved the treatment for this use, it's popularity is likely to grow. The treatment device is already being promoted under the name ?CoolSculpting.? Look for more information about CoolSculpting from DermaNetwork--coming soon!
