Why Zerona is Lipo's Newest Get Skinny Star

We are two months into a brand new year and, like many of us, you are working hard to achieve your New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get into shape. You have been diligently following your diet and exercise program, but find that no matter what you do, that extra layer of fat around your belly (or thighs) just won’t budge. You feel that you need something more to support your diet and exercise efforts and help you achieve more targeted re-contouring. What do you do? Consider using a painless and non-invasive method of liposuction that utilizes the power of laser light beams, rather than surgery, to zap those tough-to-treat areas.

Zerona is a method of laser liposuction treatment that, for many, is providing a solution for targeting stubborn areas that have not responded to other body contouring measures.  One of the first "laser fat removal" devices recently approved by the FDA for non-invasive body slimming and re-contouring, Zerona is designed to target fat cells with low-level wavelengths of light. This “lipolaser” light is aimed at specific trouble spots to make the fat seep out of the cells in that area. Once the cells have been zapped by the “lipolaser” and deflated of excess fat, the targeted area will typically appear smaller, smoother and trimmer.  It is important to note that the fat cells treated with Zerona have not been destroyed, but merely emptied. This means that if you want to keep that newly contoured area slim and trim, you will need to maintain a healthy program of diet and exercise.

Treatment Snapshot: What to Expect

Because Zerona is a non-surgical approach to fat-reduction and body shaping, the treatments are safe and virtually painless. No anesthetic is required and the treatment is unlikely to pose any medical risk. Each Zerona session typically lasts 40 minutes, and patients are advised to undergo a series of six treatment sessions every two or three days over a period of two weeks. Patients are also advised to drink copious amounts of water to flush their system and optimize treatment during those two weeks. Most physicians offering Zerona treatments recommend that patients drink plenty of water in the pre- and post-treatment phases as well, to achieve optimum results.

How it Works

Zerona uses five laser light beams to target adipose tissue – subcutaneous fat that is just under the surface of the skin – in specific areas of your body. The lasers reach through to the fat cells in your target areas, creating a porous surface on the cells that allow them to collapse and expel liquefied fat.  You won’t feel a thing as the laser beams do their work. You will typically lie quietly on a table in a private room – wearing your bathing suit and special glasses that protect your eyes from the laser lights. A technician will position the Zerona machine so that the laser light beams are aimed at your trouble spots at timed intervals. The treatment is quiet and stress-free, allowing you to take a nap or make a phone call. The machine will shut off automatically at the end of your treatment, and your technician will re-enter your treatment room to move the Zerona machine out of your way so you can get dressed.

Guidelines to Follow During Treatment

Drink Plenty of Water Every Day – at least 60 ounces – to aid your lymphatic system in processing and flushing the liquefied fat that has been excreted from your fat cells.

Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, Soda and Junk Food, as these can negatively impact your body’s ability to metabolize and flush the fat from your body once it has been released from your fat cells.

Don’t skip treatments. For your two-week series of Zerona treatments, it is best that you don’t go more than 72 hours (3 days) between sessions, or the efficacy of the “fat draining” process will be minimized. In fact, some of the fat may be reabsorbed into your fat cells if you allow too much time to elapse between sessions.

While Zerona body contouring treatments require a two-week commitment of several sessions to complete, the potential payoff is worth it. Those who are looking to boost their overall fitness efforts will very likely be happy with the targeted results that Zerona delivers.

Kick Off the New Year with Confidence by Treating Acne Scars

Ringing in a new year isn't necessarily a joyous time for people with acne scars. And while these scars are permanent, a person's appearance can be improved upon. Depending on the types of acne scars that you have, several different methods may have to be employed, the most effective treatment methods being surgical in nature. The most common treatment is a resurfacing, which can be done either with a mechanical device or a laser. More severe and deeply pitted scarring may require surgical excision and grafting. These permanent scars cause many people to lose self-esteem. If you're struggling with your self-confidence because of acne scars, consider one of the following options to start off the new year right:

Dermabrasion

Motorized dermabrasion is a mechanical resurfacing method. It generally removes both the epidermis and the dermis of the skin with an abrasive tool. Local anesthetic is used to numb the area, and then the device is used to resurface the skin. Removing the outer layers allows new skin to be exposed, leaving a more clear and clean appearance. Sun exposure should be avoided initially, and the full results of a treatment are visible after four to six weeks.

Manual dermasanding  is also a resurfacing treatment, which requires local anesthetic. The doctor uses a silicon carbide sandpaper to remove the outer layers of skin. This method is sometimes used along with a chemical peel or another treatment for acne scars.

Lasers

CO2 lasers and YAG lasers can be used to resurface the skin and minimize acne scars. The outer layers of the skin are destroyed, bringing new skin to the surface. Laser resurfacing methods can be more effective than dermabrasion or sanding, but might require a longer recovery time.

Chemical Peels and Fillers

Chemical peels are used to improve the appearance of the face by removing superficial layers of the skin while promoting the growth of new skin. Fillers add volume to the skin and can temporarily improve the appearance of acne scars by flattening and evening out the skin’s surface.

Subcision and Excision

Subcision involves removing scar tissue beneath the skin with the use of a needle. An excision requires cutting out a large acne scar and then sewing the incision shut; it involves trading a larger scar for a smaller one, which is filled in later using different methods.

Want to Avoid the Knife? 3 Minimally Invasive Body Contouring Methods

If you're ready for a body contouring procedure, but do not want to get traditional liposuction, there are a number of other techniques available. Unlike going under the knife, these offer much less downtime and are minimally invasive. You're much less likely to encounter complications when you opt for one of the following methods:

AccentXL Radiofrequency

AccentXL is a handheld radiofrequency device that contours the body by tightening the skin and stimulating collagen. It also removes some fat cells. There's no cutting involved, so there's no risk of infection or similar complications. The production of new collagen plumps up the skin and makes it tighter, and it also removes some unwanted lines.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo  is considered the latest scientific advance in laser liposuction. A small incision is required to insert the laser. The big advantage to SmartLipo is that it can target fat cells in areas that traditional liposuction can't. The upper abdomen, the inside of the arms and the neck are all difficult to treat with a regular liposuction operation. There's a danger of nicking a vein with the cutting involved in liposuction, so SmartLipo really can treat more areas of the body.

The dual lasers in the SmartLipo device liquefies targeted fat deposits. It also cauterizes the area at the same time, so there's very little risk of bleeding. The costs run between $2,000 and $8,000 per treatment, depending on the area of the body being operated on.

VASER Lipo

VASER Lipo (http://www.dermanetwork.org/information/vaser-liposelection.asp) uses sound waves to break up fat cells, which are then extracted. The device is FDA approved for use in treating any area of the body with unwanted fat. The procedure starts with a saline injection in the treatment area. The VASER Lipo device is then inserted through a small incision, and sound waves are applied. This breaks the fat cells loose from the surrounding tissue so they can be suctioned out.

All of these treatments are safe alternatives to traditional liposuction, but they do still have risks. Any of these procedures can produce unwanted results or complications, but they are generally much milder than those you'd experience if something goes wrong with a liposuction treatment.

Winterizing Your Skin Care Regimen

A change in season should mean a change in your skin care regimen since dry, cold air can cause unhealthy skin, resulting in flaking, cracking, itching and soreness. Without the right care, eczema can be exacerbated, and fine lines and wrinkles can be worsened. Incorporate the below tips for healthy winter skin:

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Though you probably have moisturizing creams left over from the spring and summer months, it is critical to use a moisturizer that is appropriate for the weather change. Suitable moisturizing creams should be oil-based instead of water-based. In addition, to keep the pores free of debris, use unclogging moisturizers such as avocado oil, almond oil or mineral oil. After showering, lather your entire body with a high-quality moisturizing lotion. The hands are more prone to cracking due to the drying effect that handwashing can have. Use a moisturizing soap and apply hand cream liberally after washing.

Suncreen in Winter?

Can you get freckles and age spots in the winter? Don't fall victim to the thought that only hot summertime UV rays can damage the skin. In fact, snow, ice and water can reflect 80 percent of the sun's UV rays, increasing the exposure and therefore allowing more damage to take place. A broad-spectrum sunscreen should be a regular part of your daily skin care routine.

Indoor Humidity

So you’re cranking up the heater to stay toasty, but all that hot air is also drying out your skin. To further protect the skin while inside, use humidifiers during the winter months. Moisture is pumped into the air, preventing the skin from unnecessary drying.

3 Things to Do Now to Prepare for Next Bikini Season

You might think it’s too early to think about bikini season, but in order to look your best come next summer, you need to plan ahead. The following three procedures can give you a drastic bikini bod makeover, but since it will take you six months to see the full effects, you need to start the process right now.

#1: Book a Thermage Treatment

Cellulite is the number one reason we fear beach season, but as little as one simple, non-invasive Thermage treatment six months before summer can drastically tighten skin and minimize the appearance of cellulite. So, how does it work?

  • Thermage uses radio frequency pulses to heat and activate collagen production in the skin, which is effective against sagging and bulging skin and yields a tighter, less dimpled appearance.

  • Thermage can performed on the majority of the body, including the face, abdomen, arms, buttocks and thighs.

  • The skin tightening effect of Thermage can last for up to three years, while the smoothing of dimples from cellulite can last from six to 12 months after the results have set in.

  • Thermage treatments are performed in a plastic surgeon's office, on an outpatient basis.

  • Thermage can soften the appearance of scars.

  • Although visible results will likely be immediate, measurable tightening and contouring will continue to appear after the initial treatment session.

Thus, for optimal results, Thermage treatments should be done about two to six months in advance.

#2: Get an IPL Photofacial

Beach season means lots of sun, but over time sun damage can cause major skin problems, so before you hit the sand, freshen up your complexion with a IPL Photofacial. How the IPL Photofacial works:

  • An intense pulsed light to penetrate the layers of the skin, resulting in the production of collagen and new connective tissues.

  • IPL Photofacial is proven effective at treating rosacea, age spots, wrinkles, veins, and skin that has been damaged by the sun's UV rays.

A few treatments might be recommended (usually a series of five to eight); however, IPL Photofacial results can be considered permanent, though touch-ups may be necessary every few years.

Since treatments are generally spaced three weeks apart, you should start scheduling your appointments now. And once you do hit the beach, be sure to always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen so your clear skin results can last longer.

#3: Laser Hair Removal from Arms/Legs/Bikini Line

And lastly, what says bikini-ready more than a smooth, hairfree body? Rather than deal with the hassle of constant shaving, many people look to laser hair removal for a permanent solution. Here’s how it works:

  • Prior to beginning the laser treatment, the targeted area of skin will be thoroughly washed using alcohol.

  • Once the technician has determined the necessary laser light energy settings for your skin type, the laser beam will be aimed at the hair follicles within the treatment region.

  • The hair follicles absorb the laser's energy causing them to die. Depending on the area being treated, the procedure can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

  • Though laser hair removal should not be unusually painful, it is common to experience mild to moderate discomfort.

  • In order to be effective, laser hair removal requires five to nine sessions, spaced approximately six weeks apart. With each subsequent session, a certain percentage of hair is removed until the skin ultimately becomes hair free. Hair is destroyed at the roots and once the hair is completely gone, the skin pores close giving way to sexy, smooth skin.

Three simple procedures, three great results. All it takes is a little planning, and you too can have a beach-ready body by the time the weather heats up. For more information on any of the aforementioned cosmetic procedures and to find a cosmetic specialist in your area, click here.

Is This Botox a Deal or a Bad Investment?

Botox deals are all the rage these days, with many websites offering coupons or discounts for extremely cheap Botox treatments. But before you cash into these “steals,” you should stop and ask yourself whether it really is a good deal or a bad investment. Here are a few key questions to ask before handing over your money.

How long have you been administering Botox?

Almost any health care professional can administer Botox, depending on where you live. In fact, that is why there are so many “steals” out there—oftentimes, rates are cheaper when the practitioner does not have the experience. If you decide to get Botox, you always want to have it administered by a medical professional, one who is trained and specializes in Botox and one who has been doing it for a while. Recommendations from other people are always beneficial.

What kinds of complications can occur with Botox?

The specialist you choose should be honest about the types of complications that can occur with Botox. Dismissing your concerns or questions without discussing them should be a big red flag. Your specialist should disclose possible complications that can occur with Botox, such as facial paralysis or asymmetry. Your cosmetic specialist should be open and honest about complications and risks, as well as assuring you that her experience means that you will be in safe hands.

Who would NOT be good candidates for Botox?

If the answer is no one, turn around and walk out the door. Not everyone should get Botox and an ethical specialist will tell you that. People that have any neuromuscular diseases, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with body dysmorphic disorder are just some people who should avoid Botox procedures. However, some unethical practitioners do not take any outside factors in mind and will perform the treatment on anyone willing to pay. If a potential doctor never turns anyone away, that is a huge warning sign.

If you see a Botox deal that seems suspiciously good, it just might be. While some reputable cosmetic specialists will offer Botox deals and discounts every now, make sure that above all you are in the hands of an experienced specialist, not someone who will give you a cheap deal as well as questionable results.

Xeomin: Why It's a Purer Muscle Relaxant

If you’ve been looking for a way to smooth out deepening wrinkles, you’ve probably heard of Botox and Dysport . However, there is now a third FDA-approved treatment to paralyze wrinkles: Xeomin. It has already been used by more than 80,000 people worldwide to treat adults with cervical dystonia characterized by abnormal neck pain and movements, and it is now approved in 20 countries to treat facial wrinkles.

Xeomin works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, causing the targeted muscle not to contract. Although different types of wrinkle injections have a lot in common, there are three key differences with Xeomin:

1.    Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated, which is an advantage regarding distribution.

2.    Xeomin is lacking some of the proteins that are present in other muscle relaxants. The immune system breaks down those proteins eventually, leading to the need for more frequent treatments. Xeomin on the other hand is largely ignored by the immune system, so the effects last longer in some people.

3.    It is also made without any additives, which reduces the chance of an allergic reaction. The injections are composed of botulinum toxin type A and nothing else.

Xeomin takes about one week for the full effects of the treatment to be realized and lasts from three to six months. Like any other cosmetic procedure, Xeomin has its pros and cons and you should always consult with a skin care specialist before deciding on any treatment. BOTOX? Vs. Dermal Fillers: Which Is Right for You?

You’re sick of seeing those wrinkles staring back at you in the mirror, and you’re ready to do something about it—but what treatment is best? People who want to eliminate signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines often find themselves choosing between BOTOX® and dermal fillers. Both cosmetic treatments are injected into the skin and contain ingredients that smooth or fill out fine lines, thereby giving your skin a younger appearance—but there are some major differences in how they work. Get the need-to-know info on both BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers to make the right choice for you:

BOTOX®

BOTOX® is a temporary cosmetic procedure that involves injecting a special formula into problem areas where wrinkles occur on the face, like the corners of the eyes and forehead. The chemicals in BOTOX® work to disable the tiny muscles under the skin that are causing the skin’s surface to wrinkle—so for the three to six months it lasts, your wrinkles will disappear.

Dermal Fillers

There are many different dermal fillers available on the market today, like JUVEDERM®, Restylane®, and Artefill, but they all work in basically the same way. The substance is injected just under the skin in the area where the wrinkle appears, ‘filling’ out the area by increasing the volume underneath the wrinkle. Dermal Fillers work well for deeper wrinkles, like the ‘marionette lines’ extending from the corners of the mouth to the nose, but depending on the formula can treat smaller wrinkles as well. The results can last from three months to over a year, depending on the brand and product used

Since every cosmetic procedure has its own pros and cons, always talk to your skin care specialist and consider having skin tests done before deciding which treatment is the best option for you. To make an appointment with a skin care expert in your local area today, click here!

Kim Kardashian has psoriasis
On Sunday's episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians," Kim Kardashian discovered that she has psoriasis.

On the show, Kim is shocked to find red, scale-like patches on her skin. She visits her dermatologist, who quickly makes the diagnosis.

“I cannot have psoriasis,” Kardashian says to the doctor.

Interestingly, she notes that her mother has psoriasis, which can be a genetic disorder.

“I’ve heard of it before, because my mom has always had it. She didn’t have red flaky dots all over,” Kim said.

Psoriasis is a common skin disorder, usually becoming apparent in young adulthood. It is thought to be at least in part an immune disorder. It is not curable, but can be controlled with topical medications and light therapy.

Kardashian said: “My career is doing ad campaigns and swimsuit photo shoots. People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect. When I gain a pound, it’s in the headlines. Imagine what the tabloids would do to me if they saw all these spots.”

This-Not-That: 3 Cosmetic procedures that deliver results without downtime

Be honest: everyone has something they'd like to change about their look, but the high prices, recovery time, and even fear of going 'under the knife' can make plastic surgery procedures unrealistic. Check out these three alternatives that deliver noticeable results faster and easier than you'd think:

1) Laser Lipo vs. Liposuction: With laser liposuction, you can slim down your body without going under general anesthesia. While there are multiple brands to choose from, laser liposuction generally involves a cannula being inserted under the skin, through which a laser is used to melt fat away. Bonus: the laser tightens the skin, contouring it over your newly firmed curves.

2) Injectables vs. Facelift: Everyone's heard of BOTOX and dermal fillers like Juvederm, but did you know that when they're used in combination for a full-face treatment, it's called a Liquid Facelift? Using dermal injectables rather than a surgical facelift means that you wont have any scars and results will be natural. Injectables can even be used to plump up your lips and correct nose shape! Plus there's almost no recovery time, so you're back to work or play right away.

3) Laser Ablation vs. Vein Surgery: Gone are the days of month-long recovery times propped up in bed after varicose vein surgery: new advances in vein treatment have revolutionized varicose vein treatment. Patients are actually encouraged to walk around after laser ablation treatments, and are wide awake through the entire procedure. Varicose vein treatment has never been easier.
