Luscious Lips
dermal_fillers_derma_blog_May09.jpg

Angelina Jolie lips are touted as some of the best and most sought after.
Women all over the world, yearn for the fuller and pouty lips, so what are
some of the available treatments to get that luscious look? There are a
number of options for lip augmentation, some less invasive, painful and
costly as others. But some women prefer the fuller enhancement.

The Examiner said, "There are many dermal fillers on the market. While some
work fine for filling facial wrinkles; many are not appropriate for lip
augmentation. Radiesse, which consists of microspheres of calcium
hydroxyapatite, works nicely for filling deep wrinkles. However, injecting
it into the thin lip tissue may result in lip nodules that can be painful
and unsightly. On the other hand, fillers composed of cross-linked
hyaluronic acid (Juvaderm, Restylane) are gels which usually work well for
lip augmentation."

Lip augmentation is considerably common and very effective to get that
Angelina Jolie look. Cosmetic procedures much like lip augmentations with
dermal fillers are becoming very popular for women young and old. So pucker
up!

Reprimanding Quick Fixes
do-it-yourself_derma_blog_May09.jpg

We mentioned recently that the idea of do it yourself Botox and other facial
fillers had been gaining popularity in the US and abroad. Many women have
fall victim to the dangers associated with do-it-yourself kits. Cosmetic
fillers are meant to be applied by professional physicians and clinicians
only. Do it yourself kits are recipes for disaster and danger for the
person attempting to do it at home.

Sky News reported on a case saying, "What began as a lunchtime beauty
treatment ended up with general anaesthetic as a surgeon sliced open her
lower eyelid to cut away the leaching substance. Four surgeries and several
thousand pounds later she is still scarred. Her before and after pictures
tell a starkly different story to advertisements for the procedure, and
experts say her case highlights the potential dangers of cosmetic fillers.
Made of varying substances including hyaluronic acid and collagen extracted
from cows, dermal fillers - injected under the surface of the skin to plump
it up - are widely used in Hollywood."

Botox Age Increase
Botox_Derma_Blog_April09.jpg

Generally we have seen an age decrease in Botox patients, it started off
with mid-life crisis candidates, to twentysomethings injecting for
prevention. But now the newest trend to hit cosmetic dermatology is older
users. It is noted that over 15% of Botox patients are over the age of 60.
Clearly the Joan Rivers and Goldie Hawn's are influenced the older
baby-boomer demographic to age more gracefully or attempt to impede aging as
a whole.

PR News Wire released the report saying, "More and more women over 60 are
having non-surgical treatments including Botox, dermal fillers and skin
peels and treatments, as well as plastic surgery such as breast implants and
facelifts. Encouraged by their daughters and the increasing high profiles
and media coverage of amazing looking celebrities who are in their 50s, 60s
and 70s, such as Joan Collins, Jane Seymour and Lulu, UK's Botox Grannies
are driving a new demand for non-surgical cosmetic treatments."

The press release and subsequent articles have referred to this trend as
"Botox Grannies." A key factor permitting this growth in consumers is the
fact that people in their 60s generally are near-retirement and have a more
disposable income. Meaning they can afford to splurge on cosmetic
enhancements unlike penny-pinching youngsters.

Forgotten Gem
microdermabrasion_derma_blog_Feb09.jpg

The buzz around town and globally is clearly Botox, anti-aging and facial fillers. The minimally-invasive procedures are a hit from Brazil to San Francisco. But many of us have forgotten about one of the best strategies for healthier, revitalized and younger skin - microdermabrasion and chemical peels. For years the two of these procedures were the hot studs in town, but now with Botox still thriving in a dwindling economy, its proving that it's here to stay. Although Botox is a wonder at wrinkle-ridding, these two more cost efficient techniques will take up less of your time and be considerably more hassle free.

"The range of muscle relaxants and dermal fillers is much better today," he says. "And the demand for these types of non-invasive procedures will continue to grow. There has been a lot of research over the past decade into non-surgical techniques. Ten years ago the only things really available were facelifts and laser resurfacing. Now there are new lasers that actually work beneath the skin with less pain and better recovery times." (Sydney Morning Herald)

If you're worried about pinching pennies right now, perhaps very expensive invasive procedures and injections like Juvederm, Restylane and Botox are not the wisest options.

Cut Prices, Cut Quality?
dermal_fillers_derma_blog_Feb09.jpg

Before investing in facial fillers, be sure to do ample research and homework about the physician you are putting your trust in. Many dermatologists are urging potential Botox, Restylane and Juvederm patients to take caution when seeking out cut-price deals, for many may also be cutting quality along with prices.

The UK Daily Mirror is saying, "Not only may these substances be below standard, they're likely to be given by poorly-trained people, leading to problems from infection to permanent scarring. People opting for dermal fillers are especially at risk. Unlike muscle-relaxing treatment Botox, dermal fillers are unregulated in the UK. This means they can be bought and administered by anyone and no quality and safety checks are carried out on the clinic or salon."

But such concerns should not only be considered when in the UK or oversees, slashed prices in the US can also mean poorly trained so-called 'experts' or bad quality products. Make sure your 'expert' is using the right products and technique when administering you with injections.

Success of Botox Spurs Innovation
There aren't exactly any products on the market today that are the same as Botox. There's no such as "generic Botox". But there are a lot of injectable dermal fillers that aim to achieve the same effects as Botox.

It is believed that these other innovative products were brought into existence precisely because of the success that Botox has seen on the market. Although nobody has been able to replicate the Botox formula, many other great products have been developed in an attempt to take over some of the market that Botox is cornering.

Botox is a great brand product that people recognize and one of the most popular anti-aging medicines on the market today. However, that doesn't mean that there's not the potential that another better product could take over one day.

Learn about some Botox stats and how they influence the competition here.

Question of the Day: Without Botox, would so many dermal fillers have been created?

San Diego Skin Care Follows Economic Trends
There is a trend in cosmetic procedures right now among many parts of the nation. This trend is towards a decreased interest in invasive plastic surgery procedures and an increased interest in non-invasive procedures that can provide some of the same results at a much lower cost. This trend is being driven by the changes that are taking place in the economy and is impacting different regions throughout the U.S.

A new report indicates that San Diego is a city that is following this trend. There has been an economic downturn in this area that has impacted the interest in cosmetic surgery options available in Southern California. There has been a corresponding boom in non-invasive procedures such as chemical peels and dermal fillers.

The goal for patients has remained the same despite the economic changes in this country. Patients want to look younger and improve specific areas of their appearance. They're simply using different, more affordable, methods of making that happen through the help of professionals in the skin care business.

Question of the Day: Is the trend in San Diego non-invasive surgery representative of nationwide trends in cosmetic surgery?

Injectable Silicon Not Recommended for Cosmetic Purposes
It is possible for a doctor to purchase liquid silicon for the purpose of medical procedures such as retinal detachment. Some doctors purchase it under the guise of using it for these medical procedures and then actually use it as a cosmetic product designed to correct facial deformities, remove wrinkles and reduce acne scarring. It should be noted by patients that the FDA has not approved injectable silicon for these purposes and therefore that this is not a recommended procedure.

The FDA is still reviewing the use of liquid injectable silicon for the purpose of cosmetic enhancement. Until the time when the FDA explicitly approves the product for this type of use, patients should make sure to use alternative products for the purposes intended by this product. Dermal fillers are a strong example of what can be done to serve the same purpose as injecting liquid silicon would serve.

Learn more about this topic from the original article here.

Question of the Day: At what point is it safe to use liquid silicon for cosmetic procedures?

Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery: Lindsay Davenport
Lindsay Davenport is an Olympic athlete who is known for her appearance in four different Olympics and for her gold medal win in the sport of tennis. She is also a woman in her thirties who has used dermal fillers to look and feel her best when she's in the spotlight and she's not afraid to share that information with the world which is evidenced by the fact that she serves as a spokesperson for the Juverderm injectable gel product.

Davenport says that Juvederm has helped to improve the way that her skin looks, giving it back the natural bounce that she had when she was younger and making her appear closer to the age that she feels rather than the age that she is. Her purpose in becoming a spokesperson for the product has been to share this information with others so that people who look up to her can be educated about the safe and effective use of this product.

Question of the Day: What other olympic athletes are acting as spokespersons for cosmetic surgery products this year?

Botox vs. Wrinkle Creams
There is an article available online this week which takes a look at the pros and cons of using wrinkle creams and the pros and cons of using Botox for the purpose of getting rid of wrinkles. The report seems to favor wrinkle creams and ultimately says that Botox is riskier and more costly so people should opt for a cream-based anti-aging regimen instead. However, there remain some good reasons to choose a non-invasive cosmetic procedure such as Botox rather than using these creams.

The main reason that you would choose Botox over wrinkle creams is that Botox has a higher rate of success in eliminating wrinkles. There is very little proof that wrinkle creams are actually effective. Additionally, the results of Botox treatments begin to appear immediately. And while it's argued that wrinkle creams cost less, the fact is that you have to use them every day for years on end to achieve results whereas the Botox bill only comes in intervals.

It is also important to note that Botox is not the only option out there for non-invasive cosmetic surgery used to treat wrinkles. There are a variety of different dermal fillers on the market now. Those people who have concerns about the use of Botox may find that one of these other dermal fillers can reduce those concerns while offering better results than a wrinkle cream.

Question of the Day: Are wrinkle creams ever better to use than anti-wrinkle dermal fillers are?
