Throughout his dermatologic career, Dr. Gold has pioneered research initiatives that have gained both national and international exposure. In 1989, Dr. Gold became the first dermatologist to begin study on the use of topical silicone gel sheeting for the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids. The first paper in the dermatologic literature on this subject appeared in 1992, which demonstrated the effectiveness of topical silicone gel in the reduction in size, decreased thickness, and color change back towards normal for these difficult to treat lesions. In 1994, Dr. Gold published a detailed controlled clinical trial utilizing topical silicone gel sheeting for hypertrophic scars and keloids and introduced the concept of prevention using topical silicone gel sheeting. A large controlled trial, published in 2000, confirmed earlier data showing that the use of topical silicone gel sheeting prophylactically could prevent hypertrophic scars and keloids in susceptible individuals.
Dr. Gold is also the only United States dermatologist who participated in an international panel which published in 2002 the international guidelines on the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids. Dr. Gold has lectured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, South America and Asia on treating hypertrophic scars and keloids and remains an expert in this field today.
Dr. Gold also has extensive research interest in the laser field for aesthetic dermatology. He performed the first clinical trial on the use of the intense pulsed light source for hair removal and reported its beneficial aspects in 1996. Dr. Gold performed and published the 3-months intense pulsed light for hair removal trials, 1-year intense pulsed light / hair removal clinical trials, 2-year intense pulsed light / hair removal clinical trials, the treatment of blond hair with the intense pulsed light and the treatment of skin types 5 and 6 with the intense pulsed light.
Dr. Gold has presented this data at national and international symposia and is regarded as the world's expert in intense pulsed light therapy for hair removal.
In addition, Dr. Gold has helped develop and worked with a variety of medical device companies on utilizing intense pulsed light therapy for other indications, including vascular, pigmentary and photorejuvenation efforts. He also has helped pioneer the use of other laser therapies, including new resurfacing lasers, non-invasive laser resurfacing lasers and non-ablative lasers, as well.
