Various Treatments For Wrinkles

When wrinkles and fine lines develop early on the face, it is a sure sign that the skin has either been damaged by the sun or the signs of aging are setting in.

Premature aging is accelerated by a number of factors but the two most important are prolonged exposure to the sun and smoking.

Other causes of wrinkle and line formation on the face include:

- over use of facial expressions

- poor nutrition

- skin disorders like psoriasis, acne

The initial beginnings of wrinkle are fine lines. The fine lines progressively deepen and form coarse lines with deep folds. The persistence of these lines portrays a face which may appear not only old, but apprehensive, worried, angry, anxious, sad or depressed. These facial features represent a negative image of the face despite the individual being positive.

Our aesthetic dominated society is now increasingly concerned with wrinkles and line formation. Since no one can reverse or prevent aging, the next best step is to treat the wrinkles and lines themselves.

Today, the treatment of these facial cosmetic problems has been developed into an art form by the cosmetic surgeons.

Injecting
or implanting substances which either temporarily weaken the muscles or act as skin volume fillers serve to soften or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and produce a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance.

The majority of treatments for wrinkles can be done as an outpatient in the physician's office. The procedures are generally regarded as safe, with minimal downtime and decent results. However, there is a wide array of procedures to choose from and the best person who can select the optimal treatment for you is the plastic surgeon

Botox: This potent neurotoxin is excellent for the treatment of forehead creases, brow furrows or eye lines (crow's feet) produced by frequent facial expression muscles contractions. Botox essentially paralyzes the facial muscles and erases the wrinkles. The effect of botox may last anywhere from 2-3 months. After an injection of Botox, the results are not immediate. In most cases, the wrinkle free face appears after 7-10 days. Because the injection is temporary, repeat injections are required in future.

Dermal fillers. There are a number of collagen related products which are now being used to treat wrinkles and hollowed cheeks. The majority of the Injectables can be placed anywhere on the face. The injections are done in the physician's office and the downtime is minimal. These painful injections do provide a wrinkle free face, but the effects only last 3-12 months.

Hyaluronic acid which is a natural soft jelly like substance in the body is also widely used to treat wrinkles and also acts as a volume filler. It is soft in consistency and provides a good result.

Fat injections are also used to treat wrinkles and lines. The fat is obtained from elsewhere in the body and then injected. The fat does produce a slightly longer result but asymmetry and unevenness of the skin are two common problems

Permanent implants
have also been developed and include materials made from special plastics like ePTFE. This chemical cannot be injected but has to be inserted below the skin using small incisions. The material provides a more lasting result. It can be done in an office setting under local anesthesia

The best treatment for your wrinkles can only be determined by a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of lines and wrinkles.
