Acne Caused by Pravachol

Pravachol (pravastatin) is a newer drug which is used to treat high cholesterol levels. The drug acts by lowering the cholesterol levels in the body. It is widely prescribed in individuals who have coronary artery disease, those who have had a heart attack, stroke or those with peripheral vascular disease.

It is one of the most well studied lipid lowering drugs and has been found to be both effective and safe. Adverse reactions reported with Pravachol have been mild and rare.

There are a number of rare individuals who do develop skin adverse reactions after taking Pravachol. These side effects include:

- itching

- dry scaly skin

- hair loss

- hives

- mild acne

These skin side effects are mild in nature and reverse once the drug is stopped. Anyone who develops these side effects should se their physician for an alternate drug to lower cholesterol. If the skin effects remain persistent after stopping Pravachol, a visit to the dermatologist is recommended to allow for proper treatment.
