The CoolSculpting procedure, which was recently approved by the FDA, uses a revolutionary new technology known as cryolipolysis to get rid of unwanted excess fat in a manner than is completely non-invasive. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis without the need for anesthesia. The CoolSculpting device is used to cool the unwanted fat cells to just above the freezing point. This causes the liquid fat to become solid, and the fat cells shrink. Over the course of the next few weeks the damaged cells and solidified fat are removed from the body through the natural metabolic process. Because there is no need for anesthesia, patients are able to immediately resume their normal daily activities. Side effects are very limited and include redness, tenderness, and mild numbness in the area treated. The results of CoolSculpting take time to develop, and multiple treatments may be required to achieve the desired results.
