In simplicity, one (ablative) burns the skin to a predetermined depth while the other (non-ablative) passes through or into the skin without burning it. While both are used for skin rejuvenation, they have different effects on work on making skin better through different approaches. Ablative removes outer layers of skin, non-ablative is more for helping the skin make more collagen and produce some tightening effect. Often, they may be done together.

Ablative lasers are ones that actually destroy skin tissue during the treatment, while non-ablative lasers do not destroy tissue. When an ablative laser is used there is normally a fair amount of "downtime" because the injury caused to the skin tissue during treatment is enough so that a recovery period is required. Non-ablative laser treatments typically allow you to get right back to work, home, school or other activity with no recovery time. Think about it in terms of an injury caused to the skin by the lasers. The healing process associated with this controlled injury causes the skin to improve and ablative lasers cause more of an injury than non-ablative lasers.
