Laser tattoo removal is effective for lip tattoos. The type of laser would depend on the type of ink used. Since you mentioned they are letters, I would assume they are black ink. Most all tattoo removal lasers are effective for black ink. I would recommend a Q-switched Nd:yag, Alexandrite or Ruby laser. Make sure the physician you see is using a Q-switched laser for your tattoo, as only these "super fast" lasers generate the type of energy profile needed to destroy the tattoo ink while preserving normal tissue.

It is possible for laser tattoo removal to be performed in this area. The problem is that when lasers are used in areas of "mucosa" or "mucous membranes", there is a might higher chance for burns, blistering and scarring. We do not usually perform this procedure at our practice, but are sure that there are practitioners that will.
