I never recommend over the counter acne products because they are usually too buffered to be as effective as those purchased through a physician's office. I like to tailor the skin care for each patient because everyone's skin and acne are different. So it is hard to recommend active ingredients because what works for one patient may not work for another. Please seek the advice of a skin care professional.

The primary active ingredients in over the counter acne medications
are salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and retinols. There are some
recent studies that support thr use of green tea extract as well.
These are the ingredients I would have you look for. I prefer facial
washes with 1.5% to 2% salicylic washes and to use them 2 times per day.
You will likely not find a product with both retinol or benzoyl
peroxide in them. They can cause dryness and irritation especially
when used together. I would tell you to try one or the other. I like
to try the benzoyl peroxide 5% and use it daily for at least 6 weeks
to give it a chance to work or the retinol 0.5% daily and also give it
6 weeks. If these do not work you may want to see your physician.
Many people think they need to see the dermatologist for acne but most patients will do well going to their pediatrician or family physician.

There are many OTC products for acne and it is difficult to make a recommendation. Benzoyl peroxide is one common ingredientknown to be of benefit. It is found in prescription as well as OTC products. Higher strengths can cause skin irritation and are not necessarily more effective.

Look for products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and retinol. If you are over 25, don't use the benzoyl peroxide, since it can start to thin the skin. Make sure that you wash your face thoroughly at least twice a day. Consider purchasing a Clarisonic. The Pro model, with 4 speeds, is only available from physicians, but a 3 speed model is available in stores. Don't neglect wearing sunscreen, but make sure that it is oil free, and should contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.

Neutrogena has a nice line of products in general. However, many acne clients do get the best results from using at least some prescription grade products. Obagi Clenziderm is a great system (either the Normal to Oily or Normal to Dry system) which contains prescription level salicylic acid and benzyl peroxide. You don't need a written Rx for this product but you need to purchase it from a licensed distributor (such as a medispa, or some dermatologists, plastic surgeons, etc also carry the line in their offices).
