Your hormones can cause an excess of oil to be made which is the favorite food for bacteria that cause acne. The change in hormones can alter oil production which can in many cases improve acne.

Acne is often caused by a hormone imbalance. Birth control pills can stabilize this problem. However, I do not like to jump to this treatment unless other treatments have not worked. I like to save birth control pills for their real purpose.

There are few birth control pills which have been FDA-approved for use in women for treatment of acne (but all will work). The hormones in the birth control pills suppress formation of acne, which is a condition worsened by male hormones. Since birth control pills have estrogens and progestins (female hormones), they counteract and override any male (androgen) hormones.
