Hello. The mechanism that causes Melasma is not well understood, but there is a strong correlation between hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, ovarian cysts, etc. and the condition. It is very likely that if you were going to get Melasma at the time of pregnancy that you would get it during pregnancy and not just during breastfeeding. In either case, there are excellent treatment options and we use hydroquinone in liquid form to control the pigment associated with Melasma.
