Hello. We use a couple different methods for getting rid of pigmented acne scars.

1. Treat the acne itself. If you get rid of the acne, the scars will fade eventually.
2. Laser treatments for brown spots. There are specific lasers to use that can help get rid of brown spots and acne scars.
3. Bleaching creams. We have several hydroquinone based bleaching creams that can help with acne scars.

Understand that getting rid of the brown spots is different than getting rid of what causes them (the acne). So the decision about the treatment of the spots should be made in conjunction with the treatment plan for the acne that is causing the spots.

African American patients need to be especially careful in treating their skin. The best treatment for treating your skin type to remove pigmentation issues is home glycolic lotion. It is a "smart lotion" and removes what is not suppose to be on your skin in a slow way. You should not do lasers or peels.
You need to go slowly even with the lotion. If you get a rash from the lotion you will hyperpigment (get darker). So you need to go slowly with your treatment. You need to be careful and use a small am unt of lotion to be sure you don't irritate the skin. Also, be sure to wear sunscreen when using these products.

You can do a chemical peel or a ViPeel. It is safe and effective for ethnic skin.

I don’t have cystic acne. In fact, my face is clear right now, except for a bit of texture. But I am Hispanic and I suffered from bad moments of acne in the past year. There are a lot of dark spots left over and they are not going away. I want to try Accutane to prevent any future pimples. I’ve also seen people have such flawless skin while on Accutane and wonder if I could get on it just to help my severe hyperpigmentation. Thank you.
