Medical Conditions and Acne Laser Treatment

If you are looking for acne treatment options that go beyond what pills and creams can offer in treating severe acne, you might be considering laser treatment. There are a variety of laser treatments available, some of which target active acne and others that resurface acne-scarred skin. Talk to your dermatologist about what laser treatment would be most beneficial to you.

History

The use of lasers and light to treat acne is relatively new, and data from clinical trials is limited and doesn't always show consistent results. As this treatment is considered an "emerging technology," it might not be covered by your health insurance. Studies have shown that laser acne treatment works better in conjunction with other treatments, and may not provide lasting results on its own.

When Not to Get Laser Treatment

Before considering laser therapy for your acne, be aware of the risks and side effects. Resurfacing treatments can be quite painful, generally require several weeks to heal, and leave the skin vulnerable to infection until it has healed. If you are prone to cold sores or have active acne, you are likely not a candidate for laser resurfacing treatments.

Lasers that fight the causes of acne, such as bacteria and excess oil production, also come with side effects. If you have a darker skin tone, you may experience hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation--darkening or lightening of the skin--which can be permanent. You can have a skin test performed before the treatment to determine how your skin responds to the laser. Other side effects of the treatment include redness, swelling and loss of sensation at the treatment site, all of which are usually temporary

There are safe alternatives to laser acne treatment if you are not a candidate for the procedure. Non-laser light therapies have been used to kill acne-causing bacteria. A combination of treatments often provides the best results and prevents acne flare-ups and scarring. Your dermatologist can help you determine what acne treatment options are available to you.
