Potential Side Effects of Acne Treatment

For those who suffer from acne, finding an effective and safe acne treatment is high on the list of things to do. While there are many different types of acne treatments available over the counter, the most powerful are prescriptions from doctors or skin specialists. These medications have some possible side effects. While most are minor, some can be very serious. Knowing these potential side effects prior to starting treatment is crucial.

Common Over the Counter Remedies

The most common medications used in over the counter acne treatments are benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and alcohol. These treatments are designed primarily for those with mild acne, and it treats them very well. Overuse can cause dryness and possibly a rash. If you experience either of these side effects, stop using the product and consult your doctor. You may need a different type of medication.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin, also known as Accutane, is the most powerful acne medication at this time. This medication is reserved for those with severe acne. This can only be prescribed by a doctor, and in order to get the prescription, blood work is required. The blood work is done because there are so many serious side effects to this medication. This medication is prescribed as a last resort because of the potential the side effects, which are:

  • Depression - General sadness or feeling a bit off.
  • Chapped Lips
  • Birth Defects - Pregnant women are not allowed to take this medication at all. Likewise, women who are breastfeeding may not take this medication either.
  • Urinary problems
  • Lessened night vision - Driving at night on this medication is not recommended.
  • Joint or muscle pain

Antibiotic Treatments

Antibiotics are another form of acne treatment. With all antibiotics, the more you use them, the less potent and effective they become in your system. Also, there have been many studies conducted that call for a restraint in the overuse of antibiotics. Allowing the body to rely on these too often reduces the body's natural ability to defend itself. Other possible side effects include:

  • Rash
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Digestive and gastrointestinal issues

Birth Control Pills

While these pills are used to help prevent pregnancy, many have a beneficial side effect of preventing or reducing acne. If this is used as an acne treatment, the following side effects are possible:

  • Melasma - This is a dark skin coloration on parts of the face exposed to the sun. It is only a cosmetic concern and causes no other harm.
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Water retention
  • Depression
  • Slightly increased risk of heart attacks, blood clots, breast cancer and stroke

Minocycline

Minocycline is a specific drug used to treat severe acne, along with many other bacterial infections. Side effects from this treatment may include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness

As with any type of medication, if you find you are suffering from a side effect of the medication, immediately call you doctor. Explain exactly what is going on and they will, most likely, change your treatment. Any acne treatment you are on may cause some side effects; be sure to know exactly what they may be before you begin taking any medication.
