How to Prepare for Acoustic Wave Therapy

Acoustic Wave Therapy was introduced in 2006 as a body contouring technique to remove excessive cellulite present in your body. Certain steps are recommended to be followed prior to this treatment.

Acoustic waves were originally used to cure pain due to poor circulation in stiff joints of patients. But, with time their effect on cellulite reduction was discovered. Cellulite is simply the dimpling effect on the skin due to the hardening of the connective tissue below your skin's surface. More women then men suffer? from this cellulite problem, which results in an uneven superficial layer. Acoustic Wave Therapy uses two types of applicators to get rid of this cellulite and result in a younger and smoother skin.

If you are looking forward to achieving that ideal body contour, prepare well before undergoing the Acoustic Wave Therapy. The following information regarding this therapy will help you stay well informed before the experience.

Preparing for the Applicator Usage

The planar applicator and the radial pressure applicator are the two different types of applicators used to perform Acoustic Wave Therapy. Your physician may use either of these two, or even both, depending upon the extent of your problem. Discuss with your doctor any previous problems you might have faced while undergoing a similar treatment. This might help him in choosing the right applicator for you.

Learn to stay in a relaxed position over the massage bed. High energy waves of short durations are produced by an electromagnetic process going on in the planar applicator. This results in the breaking up of the fibrous matter and the stimulation of collagen production. As more collagen is produced, the skin becomes tighter and younger.

You may feel slight vibrations in the case the radial pressure applicator is employed. Pressure waves are generated in this applicator with the help of a pallet and air chamber. This process is slower and was originally used for increasing blood circulation and pain management.

Better results can be achieved by combined usage of these two applicators. Your muscle tone may also significantly improve after the treatment.

Preparing for the Procedure?

Since the procedure is fast and pain free, not much preparation is required. Unlike other surgical treatments, this Acoustic Wave Therapy is non-invasive; hence anesthesia or sedatives are not at all required prior to the treatment. However, make sure you schedule the series of appointments well before, as many sessions are recommended for the best results. One session is generally around 30 minutes, and 2 sessions a week for 3 weeks are recommended. For enhanced results, the treatment may be repeated after 3 months.

Wear some light clothing and shorts, so that areas that are to be treated can be easily accessed by the applicator. Gowns and towels are available at the clinics.

There is no recovery period involved, and you may return to work after the procedure. Consult your physician to know if any other specific preparation prior to the treatment is required.
