Most Common Uses of Microdermabrasion

The cosmetic procedure known as microdermabrasion is done in a facial spa or a dermatologist’s office. You can also get home kits, but having it done by a professional gives the best results. Microdermabrasion is less invasive and abrasive than some other cosmetic procedures and is virtually painless.

There are many reasons people choose to use microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion isn’t just for the face either. It can be used on all parts of the skin on the body. Some reasons for microdermabrasion may require several microdermabrasion treatments in order to get the full desired effect. Your dermatologist or facial spa technician will give you an estimate of how many microdermabrasion treatments you will need.

Treats Sun Damaged Skin

Overexposure to the sun leads to wrinkles, irregular skin pigmentation, dark spots, roughness and dryness. Microdermabrasion will blast off the top layer of the dead skin on the face or other parts of the sun damaged skin on your body and will cause new and healthy skin cells to grow and stimulate collagen formation. This will remove some of the effects of sun damage, but not all of them. You can expect after a certain amount of microdermabrasion treatments, you will have a more even skin tone, and a reduction or elimination of fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will be more supple, and the elasticity of your skin will be improved.

Treats Acne and Acne Scars

Microdermabrasion works for active acne, such as white heads and blackheads, by stripping away the top layer of the skin, abrading the acne and suctioning out the clogged pores. Microdermabrasion works great for some people with acne, but if you do not benefit from the microdermabrasion, your dermatologist or spa facial tech will more than likely be able to tell you if this procedure is best for your skin.

Microdermabrasion treatments for acne scars works well to reduce or even eliminate the acne scarring; the blast of crystals will erode away the dead skin cells around the scarring and smooth out the acne scarred areas. It may take several treatments to see a desired result.

Treats Enlarged or Clogged Pores

Enlarged and clogged pores make the skin look ruddy and unhealthy. Microdermabrasion will peel off the dead skin cells from the facial skin and suction them at the same time. This will remove anything, such as dirt, hardened skin oils or whatever else is trapped inside your pores, causing them to be enlarged. The after effects will be smaller and tighter pores, a stimulation to the skin to produce healthy skin cells and collagen (which will cause the skin to have a more even tone and be more radiant).

Treats Wrinkles and Age Spots

With aging comes age spots and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion will not be effective for deeper lined wrinkles because these types of wrinkles are deep in the dermis where microdermabrasion doesn't reach. For deeper wrinkles, you will have to seek out more invasive procedures. For fine line wrinkles, microdermabrasion works excellently; in fact, you may see a reduction or even elimination of fine line wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, nose, and mouth in the first microdermabrasion treatment.

As for age spots, these are caused often by overexposure to the sun and the skin has trapped melanin in its pigment, causing the age spots. It may take many microdermabrasion treatments to fade the age spot(s) as much as possible and to the desired color.

Microdermabrasion is great for many reasons and can fix some of the most minor to some of the more severe skin issues. The process is practically painless and the cost is falling due to competition. Talk to your facial spa business or dermatologist to see if microdermabrasion will work for your skin issue.
