History of ArteFill

ArteFill is a dermal filler that is used for patients that require more volume, typically in the facial area. The procedure employs the PMMA technology, which has been extensively used for over 50 years. If you are considering an ArteFill procedure, it may be interesting to know some things about its history.

Development of ArteFill

The ArteFill uses the PMMA technology, which has been used in medicine for over 50 years. The PMMA are microspheres that have been used in the making of:

  • Intraocular lenses that are prescribed for patients with cataracts
  • Artificial joints

In the past 15 years, the PMMA microspheres have been employed to give soft tissue volume. However, these practices haven’t been used in the USA. The first dermal filler with PMMA used for cosmetic purposes was known as Artecoll. Artecoll was improved over the years, resulting in a new product known as ArteFill. This dermal filler uses synthetically manufactured bovine collagen.

ArteFill received FDA clearance back in October 2006 and is now widely used in the USA. The ArteFill fillers have the advantage of having more durable effects, as the PMMA microspheres are not absorbed by the human body as easily as other types of dermal fillers.
