How Botox Works

BOTOX ® , which is also known as botulinum toxin injections, is a treatment option commonly used for combating fine lines and wrinkles. It was approved and developed by the FDA specifically for the treatment of strabismus and blepharospasm, two distinctive eye disorders. Later it was also utilized for treating cervical dystonia, a neurological condition affecting the shoulder and neck area. BOTOX ® works to eliminate wrinkles by injecting the treatment directly into the muscles which form and control the area between the eyes, around the lips, and on the forehead. The injections help these muscles to relax for a designated period of time. Since the muscles in these areas remain in a relaxed state, the visible results can be dramatic. Lines and wrinkles seem to miraculously disappear, resulting in a younger, smoother appearance. While some first-time patients may fear local anesthesia or pain, BOTOX ® treatments are virtually painless. In fact, a full treatment requires only the smallest pinprick sensation, resulting in a smooth, easy cosmetic procedure. Slight, localized redness or minimal swelling may occur after treatment, but not to an unsightly extent. It is important to note that BOTOX ® treatments are temporary. Muscles will remain active regardless of how often BOTOX ® treatments are administered. However, over time the muscles may build a resistance to the procedure, and more BOTOX ® units may be necessary to achieve desired results. Repeated treatments will not cause the muscles or the skin to thin out, nor will they cause muscles to remain at rest for longer periods of time. While the FDA considers BOTOX ® a safe treatment option for fine lines and wrinkles, pregnant or nursing women should avoid the injections since side effects toward infants are unknown. Likewise, individuals who have neuromuscular disorders should also avoid the treatment due to risk of respiratory compromise and severe dysphagia. Common side effects of BOTOX ® treatments include nausea, mild headaches, and localized irritation or minimal swelling at the injection site. In few patients slight bruising may occur, subsiding after a few days. If you are considering BOTOX ® treatments, make sure that they are administered by a trained medical professional. Preferably, a dermatologist or plastic surgeon should provide the treatments to you, since they are very skilled and experienced in working with facial muscles and skin as well as proper dosing.
