What to Expect During a Botox Procedure

BOTOX ® has become increasingly popular over the last few years due to its ability to efficiently reduce lines and wrinkles, particularly in the forehead and between the eyebrows. BOTOX ® works by effectively paralyzing the muscles that cause muscles to contract in these areas, softening the look of the forehead and creating a smoother, younger look.

But what is it like to have a BOTOX ® treatment? What is expected of a patient who chooses to undergo this procedure? Those considering BOTOX ® can keep some of the following in mind for best results.

Before BOTOX ®

Before a BOTOX ® treatment, patients are generally asked to avoid alcohol as well as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil) for about a week. In addition, the cosmetic surgeon will perform a test to ensure the patient will not suffer an allergic reaction to the BOTOX ® treatment. Since BOTOX ® treatment is a relatively simple procedure, little additional preparation is necessary.

During the BOTOX ® Procedure

BOTOX ® is generally administered without anesthesia, as the procedure is not particularly painful, though some doctors might use a light anesthetic cream or cold compresses. Carefully measured amounts of Botox are injected with a fine needle into specific areas chosen by the doctor to provide the desired results. Discomfort is minimal, and patients can return immediately to everyday activities.

After BOTOX ®

After a BOTOX ® treatment, it is important not to rub the treated areas for at least twelve hours. Patients are often asked not to lie down for a short period afterward, as well?usually three or four hours. These precautions help prevent the BOTOX ® from migrating under the skin to areas where it is not wanted. If the BOTOX ® moves beneath the skin, it can cause undesired results.
