What to Expect During Juvederm

JUVEDERM ® is an injectable cosmetic filler used to fill in lines and wrinkles, usually on the face. It is typically used to reduce or eliminate lines between the eyebrows, from the nose to the corners of the mouth, or at the corners of the eyes. It can also be used to make lips look fuller and more prominent, or to soften the appearance of facial scarring.

During the Procedure

The JUVEDERM ® procedure is relatively simple, and can be performed in an hour or two in your doctor's office. Treatment can be administered without anesthetic, but if you are sensitive to needles, you can request that a numbing agent be used on the skin. The doctor will inject the JUVEDERM ® gel under the skin with a fine needle. Where the gel is injected depends on the desired results, as does the number of injections and the amount of JUVEDERM ® used. A typical treatment lasts fifteen minutes or a half an hour depending on how many injections are administered.

After the Procedure

Side effects of JUVEDERM ® are minimal, and include redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site. The results can be seen immediately, but will become more visible after a few days. No downtime is required after JUVEDERM ® treatment. Aftercare includes avoiding excessive sun exposure and delaying other facial treatments, such as chemical peels, for a period of time after the procedure. Infection can occur after treatment, but is rare. Allergic reactions are also extremely rare because JUVEDERM ® is a form of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body.

Depending on the type of JUVEDERM ® used, results can be expected to last from four months to as long as a year as the body reabsorbs the gel.
