Blue Light Therapy and Dark Skin Tones

Blue Light Therapy is an FDA approved procedure for the treatment of acne. As a general rule, people with an OSPT (Oily, Sensitive, Pigmented and Tight) skin type with a dark skin tone should avoid light therapy at all cost. This is because light therapy on a dark skin tone can lead to inflammation and worsening of dark spots. The only exception is blue light therapy.

How Blue Light Therapy Benefits Dark Skin Tones

Unlike other light therapies, Blue Light Therapy is non discriminatory to dark skin tones. This means that people with dark skin tones can still reap the benefits of the therapy the same way as people with lighter skin tones. The procedure for blue light therapy is the same across the board, regardless of skin color.

Acne can be treated by killing the bacteria without any harmful side effects such as permanent pigmentation or inflammation. In fact, blue light, being a non-invasive procedure, can effectively and safely cure some inflammatory acne vulgaris. This is a type of acne that does not usually respond well to other treatments especially for dark skin. Aside from treating acne, Blue Light Therapy also treats melasma, dark spots, hyper-pigmentation, dark under-eye circles and sun spots. It evens out skin tone resulting to a better, younger looking skin.
