How to Prepare for a Laser Light Therapy

If you are having laser light therapy performed on your body or face for the purpose of clearing of acne, smoothing out acne scars, evening out skin tone, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots, or for getting rid of dark circles under your eyes, there are certain things you have to do prior to having the laser light procedure performed.

Laser Light Therapy Preparation at Home

Laser light therapy tends to not work well on darker skinned individuals. However, it is true that those with naturally dark skin tones do not fare well with laser light therapy; neither do people who have a tan.

Dermatologists suggest using an SPF 30 lotion and moisturizing cream for the weeks preceding the laser light therapy is performed. If you do have a tan and your appointment is nearing, you should contact the dermatologist’s office that will be performing your laser light therapy procedure and find out if your tan will interfere with the laser light therapy you will be having. Do not be surprised if the dermatologist suggests pushing your appointment back a few weeks until the tan has faded and your natural skin tone is restored.

What to Avoid before and after Treatment

The dermatologist will suggest avoiding the direct sunlight directly prior to and after the laser light therapy. Be prepared by coming to the office with a wide-brimmed hat. You should avoid the sun and its UV rays for about 2 days after the laser light treatment, then, if you wil be having subsequent series of treatments, you should use an SPF 30 lotion as well as moisturizer creams in between sessions for the most optimal results.

Depending on the type of laser light procedure you have, you may be in the doctor’s office for under an hour or for several hours. Discuss with your dermatologist how long the procedure will last and what the downtime is for the laser light therapy you will be having performed.
