How ProLipo is Performed

ProLipo is a laser assisted liposuction that melts fat and makes it easy to remove. The procedure is suitable for different areas of the body, including the face, neck, arms, back, hips, waist, thighs, buttocks, knees or male chest. ProLipo will also tighten the skin and rejuvenate its appearance.

Before the Procedure

ProLipo doesn't require general anesthesia, because it will be performed under tumescent local anesthesia. Discontinue medications such as aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and contraceptive pills 1 to 2 weeks before the procedure.

Don't smoke and consume alcoholic beverages before the procedure.

The anesthetic contains epinephrine. It will be injected under the skin in the areas to be treated 30 to 60 minutes before the actual ProLipo procedure.

During the Procedure

The plastic surgeon will check to see whether the area injected with the diluted anesthetic solution is numb. Once the area is numb, the actual ProLipo procedure will be performed.

The surgeon will introduce a thin cannula that contains a laser fiber; the cannula will be dragged back and forth under the skin, in the areas that require fat reduction. The incisions will be small and will not require sutures, so they will not cause scarring.

The laser will target the fat cells, releasing energy that will melt the fat. At the same time, the lasers will tighten the skin and remodel it, so the skin won't be saggy after the procedure.

The plastic surgeon will extract the melted fat using a suction apparatus that will be connected to the cannula.

You won't feel any pain; you may feel some pressure when the laser beam is administered. When the fat is suctioned, you may also feel pressure.

Variations of ProLipo Procedure

If the amount of fat that needs to be removed is minimal, the plastic surgeon may opt not to perform the suctioning of the fat. The fat will be eliminated naturally through urine within 4 weeks of the procedure.

Duration of ProLipo Procedure

The duration of the ProLipo procedure is between 1 and 4 hours, depending on the amount of fat that has to be removed. This interval includes the time required for the anesthetic to take effect. However, you should be at the clinic at least 2 hours prior to the procedure to be able to prepare and get the anesthetic in time.

Additional Procedures

Depending on the amount of fat that needs to be removed, you may require 1 to 6 sessions for a complete remodeling of your body. Each fat removal session will be performed in the same manner. The plastic surgeon will indicate the number of sessions needed and how frequently you can schedule these. Typically, you will require a period or 3 to 6 months between each ProLipo treatment, for optimal results. The plastic surgeon may also recommend other lipotreatment procedures, in addition to ProLipo.
