Potential Risks and Complications of Vaser Liposelection

Vaser Liposelection is an advantageous fat reduction ultrasound-assisted procedure that can be used on almost all areas of the body. However, if you are considering this procedure, you must also be aware of the potential risks and complications of Vaser Liposelection. Some of the most serious side effects include burns, infections or surgery risks.

Burns

One of the most feared risks of the Vaser Liposelection may be the fact that it can cause burns. The procedure is an ultrasonic liposuction, and any such procedure can cause second or third degree burns. These are rare, but you should be aware of this potential risk.

An experienced plastic surgeon can establish exactly the frequency and power of the ultrasounds used, so that burns can be avoided. It is also important that the equipment used is suitable for Vaser Liposelection.

Infections after Surgery

The Vaser Liposelection is a surgery that involves a few small incisions. Even if rare, infections at the incision sites may occur. The infections may be signaled by:

  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Redness and swelling at the incision site
  • Pain when touching the incision site
  • Pus at the incision site

Please note that after the Vaser Liposelection surgery, there may be some drainage from the incision site, but this should stop 1 or 2 days after the surgery. You shouldn’t mistake this drainage for pus.

However, the infections may be prevented by some antibiotics prior to the surgery.

Surgery Risks

Some of the most common surgery risks include excessive blood loss and organ perforation.

The blood loss is rarely a problem, as the incisions are small and the body is also treated with a saline solution that contains blood constrictors and reduces bleeding.

The organ perforation may occur if the treated area is near a vital organ and the cannula, the thin tube used to extract the fat, accidentally touches an organ. However, if you opt for an experienced plastic surgeon, this complication can be avoided.

Fluid Imbalance

When fat is removed from the body, some liquid will also be removed along with it. Fat cells also contain water, so there is the risk of fluid imbalance after the Vaser Liposelection surgery. This risk is higher if the amount of fat extracted exceeds 10 pounds.

Negative Reactions to Lidocaine

Vaser Liposelection is a fluid assisted procedure; the fluid is injected before removing the fat cells and this fluid is made up of lidocaine and epinephrine. Some patients may develop negative reaction to lidocaine, which is a numbing agent.

People with liver problems or reduced liver function are more prone to develop negative reactions to lidocaine.

Embolisms

Embolisms may occur in patients that underwent Vaser Liposelection surgery. The fat cells are dislodged and are typically removed, but there may be a few cells that are not removed and can circulate in the blood stream. These embolisms are dangerous, as they may get to the brain or other vital organs and can even cause death.
