Vaser Liposelection has a number of advantages over traditional liposuction and is a popular slimming procedure. However, there are some potential side effects that you need to be aware of if you decide to have this surgery.
Skin Damage
Even though vaser liposelection is a gentle procedure that will protect the skin due to the ultrasound and the liquid assisted technique employed, skin damage is one possible side effect. The cannula, which is the tube used to extract the fat cells, may cause skin damage if used too aggressively. If the cannula is an unsuitable size for the treated area, it may cause skin sloughing. This may happen when the skin gets detached from the soft tissue. Patients with deficient blood circulation, diabetics and smokers have a higher incidence of skin sloughing.
The experience of the plastic surgeon you choose can be decisive in preventing skin damage or skin sloughing.
Burns
Vaser liposelection is an ultrasonic liposuction, and all of these procedures may cause burns of second or even third degree. Choosing an experienced surgeon who knows how to adapt the ultrasounds according to each skin type in part can prevent the occurrence of burns.
Embolisms
Embolism may form when one or several fat cells are dislodged but are not suctioned out, and these cells travel freely in the blood stream. These fat cells can reach the heart, lungs or the brain and stop them from functioning normally, so they are very hazardous for the health.
Loose Skin
Vaser liposelection has the disadvantage of not tightening the skin, unlike other liposuction procedures (i.e., Cool Lipo or Body Jet liposuction).
After the fat is extracted the skin remains loose. However, the skin should tighten in time, especially in younger patients, who produce collagen in higher amounts. Older patients may need additional procedures or collagen treatments to eliminate the loose skin.
Temporary Lack of Sensation
Vaser liposelection may cause temporary lack of sensation in the treated area. This lack of sensitivity may persist up to 2 weeks, but in some cases, it can be permanent. This happens if the nerves in the treated areas are damaged during the surgery. However, the surgery is accompanied by the injection of a saline solution that contains blood constrictors, which will help the surgeon avoid the blood vessels and the nerves.
Fluid Imbalance
As fat contains a high percentage of water, one possible side effect of vaser liposelection includes fluid imbalance. This may happen when the fat extracted is more than 11 pounds, or 5 kilograms.
Temporary Bruising and Swelling
As with any liposuction technique, you should expect side effects such as bruising and swelling. The procedure is said to cause minimal bruising and swelling compared to other types of liposuction, but the results vary depending on each patient. People with more sensitive skin may experience more bruising and swelling.
On average, the bruising and swelling should go away in 3 to 5 days, but these can persist for up to 1 week in some people.
