Fotofacial IPL (also known as IPL photofacial) is a
non-invasive skin treatment that lightens dark spots, spider veins, and redness
in the face, hands, and other areas. Fotofacial IPL uses broad wavelengths of
light to specifically target the brown melanin and red hemoglobin pigments in
your skin without damaging other areas.
How Fotofacial/IPL treatment is performed
Treatment is performed in your dermatologist’s office and
takes about 20 minutes per session. Your skin will be cleansed and your doctor
may apply a numbing or cooling gel for your comfort. Your doctor then passes
the handheld fotofacial IPL device over your skin. The light is administered in
flashes that feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin.
Fotofacial IPL treatment can be performed on your face,
neck, shoulders, back, and hands. People with darker skin tones may not be good
candidates for the treatment.
Results and Recovery
Most people can return to work the same day as their
treatment, although you may have noticeable skin redness and mild irritation
for one to two days. After five to seven
days the dark spots on your skin will flake off, leaving a more youthful and
even skin tone. Your skin will continue to look better over time, and multiple
treatment sessions can improve your results.
