How Q-switched laser treatment is performed

Q-switched laser treatment is performed in-office using local anesthetic and usually takes less than an hour.

Your dermatologist will numb your skin with topical or injected anesthetic. The laser hand piece is then passed over your skin. You’ll feel a rubber-band snapping sensation as the laser pulses on and off. The treated dark spots or tattoo will immediately appear white. Your dermatologist may also apply an ice pack during treatment for additional comfort.  

Recovery and results

Recovery after Q-switched laser treatment can take one to two weeks, during which your skin may become red, swollen, and appear to scab. The treated area will then appear lighter. Multiple treatments are usually necessary depending on the extent of your pigmentation, or the colors and quality of your tattoo.
