Acne Treatment for Men

Acne treatment for men kills bacteria and opens skin follicles that are clogged by dead skin cells. Genetic disposition, diet and environment are factors which cause acne in men. During the teen years, the sebaceous glands in skin release an oily, waxy substance called sebum. For men with acne, the glands continue to produce sebum into adulthood.

Active Ingredients

Skin cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid are effective acne treatment for men. Benzoyl peroxide destroys bacteria within follicles, and salicylic acid unclogs pores.

Over the Counter Treatments

Clearasil's Energizing Face Scrub for men contains 2% salicylic acid. It prevents acne by cleaning the facial hair pores. Neutrogena Complete Acne Therapy System reduces breakouts, blackheads, redness and inflammation through a three step process. First, a cleanser containing salicylic acid and micro beads is used. Second, an acne lotion containing benzoyl peroxide is applied. Third, an SPF-15 lotion containing botanical complex protects the skin from UV damage.

Prescription Treatments

If over the counter cleansers and creams don't work, a dermatologist can prescribe stronger medications. Antibiotics, taken either orally or rubbed on the skin, will kill bacteria. Retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, help unclog pores. A dermatologist can inject corticosteroids, an anti-inflammatory medication, directly into cysts.
