Retin A Facial Treatments

Today, numerous cosmetic spas and clinics recommend Retin A for the treatment of mild skin blemishes and skin rejuvenation. It has been reported that regular application of Retin A can help erase sun damaged skin, remove the very fine lines and lessens the blotchy pigmented skin lesions on the face.

Even though Retin A is mainly used by the younger aged individuals, it can be used in most individuals.

Physicians frequently prescribe Retin A use prior to any laser resurfacing or chemical peel treatments

Retin A works by removing the very superficial layers of the skin and opening the clogged pores. This clearing action of Retin A helps the chemical peels work more effectively and thoroughly.

Retin-A® is not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers, because its effects on the fetus and nursing infant are harmful.

Topical Retin A does not have any complications but it can cause a number of mild side effects on the skin which include:

- itching

- excessive drying

- peeling of the skin

- redness of the skin

These mild side effects are seen during the initial phase of application; as one gets used to the ointment the side effects do diminish. In those individuals in whom the dryness and itch persists, one may apply a moisturizer. In others, one may have to reduce the frequency of application of Retin A. At times, some dermatologist will also encourage the use of a non prescription topical corticosteroid to alleviate the side effects of Retin A

At present Retin A is approved for use in the treatment of mild acne, it has zero effects in reversing the aged skin

When you first start out with Retin A, only a very small amount should be applied to the skin. Nightly application of the cream should include gentle rubbing on to the face. One should always start off with the least potent concentration, especially for those who have fair skin. As you adjust to the cream, one can gradually used the more potent cream

Because Retin A can dry up the skin, it is recommended that one apply an oil based moisturizer with it. The Retin A should be applied once daily. After the first 4-6 months, Retin A should be applied every alternate day and then switched to 2-3 times a week

It is recommended that for the best results, Retin A should be continued life long

After Retin A application, avoiding the sun is vital. A sunscreen is highly recommended to protect the skin

The effects of long term use of Retin A are variable. Some individual claim that there is little difference in their skin, others claims that the skin is altered but the changes are not significant and yet other claim that the skin is younger looking, smooth and has tone in it.

Not all individuals report a disappearance of the fine lines. However, most individuals claim that the acne spots, sun spots and skin discoloration do improve after continued use of Retin A
