Candidacy for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy was previously called ‘Intense Pulse Light Therapy’. It is also referred to as intense light photo-facial or intense light photo-rejuvenation.

Ideal Candidates

A good candidate for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy should have healthy skin that is not prone to easy bruising and doesn’t suffer from severe scarring issues like keloid formation. People with hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, or those with a very dark skin tone are not ideal candidates for this treatment. Even intensely tanned people are not considered a safe consideration for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy.

The ideal candidate should be free from any medical condition that can impair the healing process. Therefore, folks suffering from diabetes are not suitable candidates. Insulin-dependent diabetics are particularly prone to developing infections after receiving this therapy.

People with well-hydrated or mildly-oily and supple skin are best suited for this treatment, though other skin types are also treatable by controlling the intensity of the light pulses. An ideal candidate shouldn’t be dependent upon blood thinner medications like warfarin or heparin supplementation. In fact, dependency on even herbal or alternative treatments that impair blood-clotting is not appropriate.

Pregnant women are not ideal candidates for IPL therapy. There is an underlying fear that the highly-penetrable light pulse might induce genetic deformities, though this is not listed among the few, possible side-effects associated with IPL treatment.
