Initial and Long Term Results of Acne Laser Treatment

If you are considering acne laser treatment, you may be wondering what initial and long-term results you can expect. Fortunately, because acne laser treatment targets the two root causes of acne beneath the skin's surface, the prognosis is quite good.

How the Treatment Works

Acne laser treatment works in two ways: first, the laser shrinks the sebaceous glands of the skin, significantly decreasing their oil output. In addition, the laser kills acne-causing bacteria in the tissues. This bacteria, when mixed with oil in a clogged pore, leads to acne.

Because acne laser therapy is non-invasive, patients do not require general anesthesia during the procedure. In fact, most patients experience a mild stinging sensation which is deadened by the use of a topical analgesic.

Possible Side Effects

In the immediate aftermath of the procedure, patients will experience mild swelling or redness. However, this is the same sort of pain and swelling experienced with slight sunburn. This typically abates after a few days, or even up to a few weeks. Patients who have very oily skin will notice the significant change in oil production in their skin almost immediately.

Long Term Results

The acne itself generally improves after 2 weeks. Most patients notice an improvement in two weeks with a twice weekly treatment regimen, although some patients may not need as many treatment sessions. They can expect their condition to improve over the coming months. If the patient reaches a plateau in improvement that is not satisfactory, a dermatologist may recommend another round of acne laser therapy. Patients will also experience improved collagen production in the skin, which improves the skin's appearance and will help keep acne at bay.

In general, however, this is not necessary. Patients who are concerned about the severity of their acne and wonder how many treatments will be necessary should consult with their dermatologist.
