Most Common Uses of Blue Peel

Blue Peel is most commonly used to reduce the visibility of surface skin imperfections and to remove dead skin cells. It is a peel that can be applied to the face, chest, neck, legs and hands. The Blue Peel application is a medical procedure that is performed by a physician. The peel contains trichloracetic acid, to which a special blue dye is added. The physician is able to visually observe the rate of absorption and penetration into the skin layers. This is an advantage over other chemical peels, because the rate of absorption in most peels is measured in time. The Blue Peel is applied in one to several coats.

Blue Peel application is an outpatient procedure. There may be some discomfort during the first few minutes of application. Some individuals report a burning sensation on the skin. Some doctors may recommend sedation or anesthesia for sensitive patients. Following the advice of their physician, many individuals take over the counter pain relievers prior to the procedure. Patients can return to work and resume most normal activities, as soon as the following day. The patient may notice a blue tint to the skin that may last for up to 24 hours after the treatment. Additionally, some patients may experience some redness in the treatment area. During the healing process, the skin will shed the outer layers of dead skin cells. This process generally begins about 3 to 4 days after treatment and ends in 7 to 10 days. The physician may recommend an additional treatment six months after the initial procedure.

The most common uses of Blue Peel are:

Shallow Acne Scarring

Blue Peel penetrates deeper than the light chemical peels. Classified as a medium peel, it can reduce the visible scarring and pitting caused by acne. After the initial treatment phase, the skin will take on a smoother, tighter appearance. The process also stimulates the growth of new cells and increases the production of collagen in the skin.

Fine lines and Wrinkles

Blue Peel applications can minimize the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. The outer layers of the skin are removed, revealing a brighter skin surface.

Unusual or Dark Pigmentation

Blue Peel will diminish the appearance of age-spots, freckling due to skin damage, and darker pigmentation. It can also reduce redness. Unfortunately, Blue Peel does not eliminate genetic freckling.

During the healing process, patients are advised to use a sunscreen during outdoor activities and to limit their exposure to the sun as much as possible. Generally, the use of make-up is not permitted for 1-2 weeks after treatment. Patients are also advised to schedule treatments at least 3-4 weeks in advance of major social events. Optimal results are usually visible within 3-4 weeks after treatment.
