Can restylane be used to treat puffy eyes?
Can Restylane be used on eyes? I am 42 years old and I have puffy bags around my eyes. I thought I would need to have the fat removed but was told to use a filler instead. What is best option for filler type.

We never recommend fillers to be used in the lower eye area because they can travel and pool making your bags look worse. Depending upon how baggy your eye area, laser may be a good option to tighten the skin. Wrinkles around the eyes may be treated with resurfacing lasers. If you have too much skin, surgery maybe required.

If your eyes are already puffy, filler may not be the best option because it sounds like there is nothing to fill. Filler is place for sunken or hollow eye areas. Only after an examination and consulation can your best option be determined. Skin tightening and resurfacing may be a better option for resurfacing this area.

Injectable fillers are not an answer to puffy eyes. Most likely you have herniated fat and some extra skin as the cause of that problem. That requires a surgical solution which is best treated with a lower blepharoplasty of some kind. Injectable fillers may help soften the junction between the puffy lid margin and the cheek but that strikes me as a relatively poor long-term solution and value since you are not treating the real problem.

Restylane will not treat the puffy eyes but it can help hide it. "Puffy eyes" can be caused by such things as allergies but it sounds more like you have extruded fat pads. As we age we will lose fat in our cheeks and around our eyes. We also can have the fat pads under our eyes start to bulge out. Sometimes when they are very bad surgical removal of the fat pads will be required. In many case, you can inject Restylane in to the lower border of the fat pads and hide them or make them less noticeable. I tend to inject most of the product deep down on the bone. This has the advantage of giving smoother results and also tends to be longer lasting than the superficial injection. I like to use Restylane in this area more than other fillers as Juvederm can occasionally draw too much water to the area and cause more puffiness (this happened to my wife) and Radiesse can sometimes be seen through the skin because it is white. Once I have injected the Restylane under the eyes I will often resurface the lower eye lids to get contraction of the skin if needed.

Any soft hyaluronic acid filler can be used in the region of the tear trough, which is the depression located just below the fat pad. THis will make for a smoother transition and a less baggu appearance. I am attaching an example for you to see before and after. Fillers I have commonly used in this area include restylane, juvederm, and prevelle silk.

Most of the time what appears to be puffy eyes is really due to a shrinking of the fat on the upper cheek, causing the overlying skin to sag a bit and giving a hollow tired look to the upper cheek along with a puffy appearance under the eye. I prefer to inject Juvederm (Restylane could also be used), into the upper cheek and just below the bony rim of the eye. This creates a smooth look and gives immediate results. DO NOT have fat removed under the eyes. Surgical repositioning of the fat is an option, but is probably not necessary. Removing the fat gives a hollow look to the eyes and is aging. Filler is an excellent choice for this concern.

I personally do not recommend fillers under the eyes because of potential complications. If you decide to still attempt this be sure the physician you see is VERY experienced at injecting around the eyes (such as a cosmetic ophthalmologist). Only have a physician do these injections.

There are many dermal fillers that can be used to fill in hollows are smooth out contours around the eye, of which restylane is one. I see many clients with that issue at my studio.

Fillers may have a roll, but only if the "puffy eyes" are a reflection of fat loss in the cheeks. In this case, a dermal filler for cheek augmentation can be helpful to decrease the puffy appearance of the eyes. Only by having a formal consultation can one determine what would be best for your particular situation.
