Slim Lipo Myths and Facts

SlimLipo is one of the latest types of liposuction, also known as lippoplasty. Liposuction is a form of plastic surgery in which fat cells are removed via a suction tube called a canula, in order to improve body contouring. SlimLipo uses the canula to deliver wavelengths of laser light and heat that target large areas of fat deposits and melt them into a liquid form prior to their suction removal. For patients with smaller areas of fat deposits, suction removal may not be required, as these smaller deposits will be disposed through natural bodily functions.

SlimLipo surgery has been designed to be a much less intrusive procedure than traditional liposuction because it generally requires much smaller surgical incision(s) for the introduction of the canula, and it will only target fat deposits but not other tissue. It also has the added benefit of smoothing and tightening the skin. The SlimLipo canula has an adjustable tip that is capable of reaching areas of the body traditional liposuction cannot. As a relatively new cosmetic operation, there are some misconceptions about SlimLipo that patients should be aware of if they are considering undergoing the procedure.

Myth: SlimLipo Is Not Safe

Fact: SlimLipo has been approved by the FDA as a cosmetic/plastic surgery procedure.

Myth: SlimLipo Procedures Are Painful

Fact: Patients undergoing SlimLipo surgery receive either general anesthetic or local anesthetic with a mild sedative, depending on the size of the treatment area. During the procedure patients should experience little or no discomfort.

Myth: There Is a Long Recovery Period

Fact: SlimLipo procedures can be performed in approximately one to three hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. As a relatively non invasive cosmetic surgery, the recovery period following the procedure is generally quite short. Patients can expect to be treated and return home the same day, but are warned against strenuous activity for a minimum of one week (though many return to work in just a day or two after the procedure).

Myth: There Are Many Side Effects with SlimLipo

Fact: As with any surgery, there is always the risk of complications, however SlimLipo has been specifically designed to be far less invasive than traditional liposuction, and therefore carries less risk of negative or harmful side effects. Any liposuction procedure may cause some swelling, soreness, bruising or infection at the incision sites. Patients are always recommended to discuss with their physician the potential risks or side effects associated with any surgical procedure prior to undergoing any operation.

Myth: The SlimLipo Procedure Is for the Stomach Region Only

Fact: SlimLipo surgery can be effective for many areas of the body including the ankles, knees,  thighs, buttocks, hips, waist, upper arms, back, neck and chin for both men and women.

Myth: The Effects of SlimLipo Surgery Are Not Permanent

Fact: The effects of successful SlimLipo procedures are considered permanent, thought in some cases this may depend on patient’s diet and exercise lifestyle.

Myth: SlimLipo Surgery Is Covered By Health Insurance

Fact: Like most cosmetic procedures, SlimLipo is considered elective or non essential surgery, and is therefore generally not covered by health insurance.
