People of the Recession
botox_derma_dec08.JPG

Will women and the men of the recession start budgeting for Botox? I think not. Both the New York Times and Sydney Morning Herald reported today about the influx of 'recessionistas' as they call them, flocking to dermatologists and beauty clinics for that pre-holiday prick. However, many of these people plagued with the financial blues are budgeting all things, but beauty and Botox. So whether it's the platinum gym membership with valet service and laundry or a breast lift and Botox injection, women and men of the recession still keep up with the Jones. People seem to be willing to not eat out or shop as much, but not keeping up with Botox injections...that's just plain sacrilegious.

Our culture is one that pursues and embraces indulgence and over-indulgence regardless of the pleasure pursued. So I find it hard to believe any woman or man obsessed with beauty and anti-aging with even consider cutting back costs.

Psoriasis and Obesity

Researchers may have found a link between the fat hormone Leptin and the common skin ailment psoriasis. The study says that people with the skin problem may have significantly higher levels of the fat-inducing hormone. Leptin is the hormone which regulates food intake, body weight and fat storing capabilities. The study goes on to say that the high levels of leptin may cause increased blood pressure, diabetes and a sundry of other health issues.

The study says,
"The results showed that those with psoriasis were more than twice as likely to be obese or have high blood pressure. Elevated levels of leptin were also more likely to be found in women, obese participants, and those with hypertension, metabolic syndrome, or psoriasis. After taking into account obesity, being female, or already having metabolic syndrome, they found that having psoriasis was associated with having high leptin levels."

Considering psoriasis is such a common skin disease, it is beneficial for dermatologists and patients suffering from it to know some of the various risk factors.

Botox or Babysitting that is the Question

With Christmas and Hanukkah just around the corner our budgets are bound to get a hefty dent in them. With presents, parties, wining and dining. However a survey done by US News shows that many families are starting cut costs in some pretty peculiar ways. A number of parents are getting rid of their nannies not their wrinkles. Anti-aging is clearly the top priority. During the hectic holiday months, Mom and Dad are opting for Botox as opposed to babysitting. But is our societies Botox addiction getting out of hand? Are we turning into wrinkle-ridding junkies?

According to these statistics we are becoming quite OCD about looking young.
First we heard rumors that some people were cutting back on dining out to save their nickels and dimes for Botox injections, but now to sacrifice a social life or tending to children seems to be slightly out of hand. If we progress in this line of obsession what sacrifices will be making next to get rid of pesky wrinkles and aging lines?

Winter Woes
With cold temperatures approaching this winter your skin can take quite the toll that is if it already hasn't. Cold weather can cause skin to lose its summer bronze and glow. Freezing temperatures means dried out and irritated skin. Winter doesn't just mean bad skin health; it also means added stress with a bustling Holiday household filled with parties and relatives. With the party planning comes a negligent skincare regiment. By disregarding your skin during these dry months, wrinkles, crackling and aging lines take over.

With such negative effects because of winter it is vital to routinely increase skincare treatments and seek out aid from professional treatments like Botox, facial fillers and microdermabrasion. Typically the low humidity and dry airs are the primary causes of winter skin ailments. Similarly, for those of you holidaying this upcoming month, carry on moisturizing creams and face wash because the added cold air produces even more serious skin problems like eczema.

Botox over Food?
The Herald Sun has reported an increase in Melbourne residents opting for Botox pricks instead of food. The astonishing article comes on the wake of one of Australia's most economically damaged months in history. The addicts are being stingy on food and drink with hopes of saving up for a wrinkle-ridding injection. Melbourne is most notably considered a city for lavish lifestyles, fine dining and indie style pubs, so to hear locals are choosing to sit out on a meal for a more youthful look is unbelievable.

One example the Herald Sun talked about was in regards to a local middle-aged woman choosing Botox over eating out,
"They said women were foregoing fashion, hair cuts, holidays and alcohol for Botox. Southbank's Anne Marie Ellis, 45, said she could not live with wrinkles. 'When I think about the economy I get depressed, then I look in the mirror and I get even more depressed. So I make myself look good to cheer up,' she said.Ms Ellis has been having Botox injections in her face every six months for three years, paying about $500 a session."

Although many Australian businesses are struggling to make ends meet, the cosmetic dermatology industry has boomed by nearly 20 percent in the last year. The economy may have dropped, but not the Botox world.
