Cosmelan is a topical skin depigmentation cream that reduces the appearance of blotchy dark spots on the face for a more even skin tone. Cosmelan can treat melasma, age spots, and hyper-pigmentation by inhibiting the skin enzyme tyrosinase, which is involved in the production of the skin pigment melanin.

How Cosmelan treatment is performed

Cosmelan treatment involves a cream mask that is applied by your dermatologist, as well as home applications of Cosmelan cream over a period four weeks.

Your dermatologist will cleanse your face to remove surface oils and then apply the Cosmelan cream. You go home after the application. The cream forms a mask that you will keep on for 8 to 12 hours and then wash off with water. You then apply an at-home version of the Cosmelan cream three times a day for four weeks.

Recovery

Cosmelan treatment can be irritating and cause skin redness and peeling. Discomfort can vary by skin type, but most people are able to maintain their normal activities during their treatment.  Your dermatologist will advise you on what kinds of moisturizers, sunblock, and lotions to use to relieve discomfort and skin irritation.
